I'll use this as a place holder. Musical Monday #162 is not yet complete, I hope to finish it tonight.
Now I'm done. The theme this week is more of a progression. Elie would probably break it up into subgroups.
Good luck and enjoy!

2) She had all her brains and the beauty
3) I'm young again, even though I'm very old.
4) Been alone on a desert island, and I've been a guru too
5) Mail it today if it's only to say, that you're leaving me.
6) And then the band slowed the tempo, and the music gets you down.
7) I'm younger than that now
8) You pretend it doesn't bother you, but you just want to explode
9) Combed my hair in a thousand ways

14) $10,000 a show
15) You can't judge a fish by lookin' in the pond
16) From your daddy to the prettiest bride he's ever seen
17) There's a chapter of secrets, and words to confess
18) And the simple secret of the plot;
19) I'm in the drawer by your bed
20) I took out every pretty girl in town
21) I heard your voice, I had no choice, I hang up on you
22) Tore a page of my heart

My bonuses from MM 160:
B1) Any PDQ Bach fans out there? One movement of the Schleptet not only fits the theme, but also represents the epitome of theme
Presto Hey Nonny Nonnio, the last movement. See this (starting at about 7:15):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5EkbTPPuSo&feature=related
B2) "and on that farm he had some women"
Hey Bo Diddley--Bo Diddley
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at October 25, 2010 1:58 PMI still keep misreading "The Motels" as "The Mohels."
It's become like a philosophical question, "What is the opposite of Grease?" Glad to know the answer. Yet another clever pairing.
I did like it that beyond solving the theme, each pairing was its own little puzzle.
I'm given too much credit, but thank you.
Posted by: trn at October 25, 2010 4:11 PMMy bonuses from MM160 were:
B3) "I got a worried mind, sharin' what I thought was mine"
Hey Hey What Can I Do - Led Zeppelin
B4) "You realize now, you should have tried now"
Hey You - Bachman-Turner Overdrive
B5) "Of the San Francisco beat boys, you were the favorite"
Hey Jack Kerouac - 10,000 Maniacs
1. Paperback Writer--Beatles
7. My Back Pages--Dylan, Byrds
15. Sounds like "You can't judge a book by looking at the cover" by Bo Diddley
Is "Everyday I write the book" by Elvis Costello in there somewhere? And "I'll never forget the day I read a book" by Jimmy Durante?
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at October 26, 2010 12:07 AM17 is "Who wrote the Book of Love"? Can't remember the artist and I might have the title slightly wrong.
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at October 26, 2010 12:11 AM1) Paperback Writer, The Beatles
7) My Back Pages, The Byrds
I'm thinking of taking a bookbinding course.
Could 17 be Who Wrote the Book of Love?
Posted by: trn at October 26, 2010 12:35 AM2 - Lady Writer - Dire Straits
8 - Turn the Page - Bob Seger
10 - The Story in Your Eyes - The Mooody Blues
12 - Cover Me - Bruce Springsteen
14 - Cover of the Rolling Stone - Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show
Oops, guess I was redundant.
Posted by: trn at October 26, 2010 12:40 AM3. I Write the Songs - Barry Manilow
Posted by: Gail at October 26, 2010 9:33 AMAt first I thought the progressive theme regarded more the physical putting-together of a book -- paper, pages, book. I see now it could perhaps be better described as how a book comes to be, both tangibly and intangibly, the creation of a book. Or perhaps the life of a book, depending on what the last few songs are.
Impressive theme. Seems simple at first, but then it becomes clear that it is more complex, and a bit like the story edition too.
Posted by: trn at October 26, 2010 11:08 AMThere is a Jazz/Broadway standard called "I could write a book."
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at October 26, 2010 11:24 AM18. I Could Write a Book, from Pal Joey; performed by Frank Sinatra and others
Posted by: SJ at October 26, 2010 1:54 PMfrom Pal Joey
So it's a Rodgers and Hart song.
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at October 26, 2010 2:14 PMA bonus:
"Picture yourself when you're getting old"
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at October 26, 2010 10:28 PM5 - Why Don't You Write Me - Simon and Garfunkel
Posted by: Clayton at October 28, 2010 12:15 AM"I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter" by Fats Waller would fit.
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at October 28, 2010 11:28 PMAnd now, a review:
1) "Paperback Writer" - The Beatles
2) "Lady Writer" - Dire Straits
3) "I Write the Songs" - Barry Manilow
4) Been alone on a desert island, and I've been a guru too
5) "Why Don't You Write Me" - Simon and Garfunkel
6) And then the band slowed the tempo, and the music gets you down.
7) "My Back Pages" - Bob Dylan, the Byrds
8) "Turn the Page" - Bob Seger
9) Combed my hair in a thousand ways
10) "The Story in Your Eyes" - The Moody Blues
11) The younger girls so easy to trick
12) "Cover Me" - Bruce Springsteen
13) You're looking so good, everything's in place
14) "Cover of the Rolling Stone" - Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show
15) "You Can't Judge a Book by Looking at the Cover" - Bo Diddley
16) From your daddy to the prettiest bride he's ever seen
17) "Who Wrote the Book of Love" -
18) "I Could Write a Book" - Frank Sinatra, et al.
19) I'm in the drawer by your bed
20) I took out every pretty girl in town
21) I heard your voice, I had no choice, I hang up on you
22) Tore a page of my heart
Bonus:
B1) "Picture yourself when you're getting old"
B2) "It's full of charts and facts and figures, and instructions for dancing"
Possibilities:
"Everyday I Write the Book" - Elvis Costello
"I'll Never Forget the Day I Read a Book" - Jimmy Durante
"I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" - Fats Waller
"I think I'll write a book" is a line from an Indigo Girls song, but not the title.
"Bookends" is a Simon and Garfunkel album. There's no Bookends song, though, right? The word is used in Old Friends?
The lyric for 19 reminds of me Gideon's bible from Rocky Raccoon.
Okay, here's an actual possibility: I think there's a song called The Story of Us.
Posted by: trn at October 30, 2010 9:48 PMIf "story" songs fit, then here are more examples:
"The Story of Bo Diddley"--Bo Diddley
"Wonderous Stories"--Yes
"Story of a Rock and Roll Band"--Randy Newman
trn: You're right about "Old Friends", but the album also has two songs with the title "Bookends Theme". The first is a short instrumental and the second is a bit longer with some lyrics. It isn't here, though.
