The first prejudice

DSCF8866.JPG

For years I thought that my sons were best suited for playing second base. Like me. Like me they tended to be short, had some quickness and did not hit for power. My two older sons mostly played second base.

But a few years ago a coach suggested that my youngest play first base. I didn't object, but I didn't think it was a good idea. He's too short. But the coach put him at first and he played well. He was at least as sure handed as other boys at the position.

This year, another coach put him at first. I didn't object. And he really has been playing well. Yes he made an error today. But every other ball that was thrown to him, he handled cleanly. He didn't drop the ball late in the game on a close play, when the thrown ball was over his head (though not by much.)

When I was younger, I'm sure that I didn't play first base because I was too short. I would have denied my son the opportunity. Fortunately other coaches saw past that first base prejudice.

Height is overrated at first base until your sons reach high school age. If he is the kid that can handle the mostly wild throws of his teammates, fist base is a good spot.
