Nonie Darwish writes about a disturbing trend she sees in the Obama administration (via memeorandum):
I have recently heard a former Muslim critic of Islam state that he is no longer confident that the US government will protect his civil rights as long as there are people in our government such as Mogahed and others. The empowerment of Radical Islam under the Obama administration has also emboldened the Muslim Student Association (MSA), which is merely an extension of the Muslim Brotherhood. The MSA has recently accelerated their efforts to silence any speakers who criticize jihad, Sharia or Radical Islam. Anti-Semitism is on the rise on our college campus, resulting in total disregard for freedom of speech aiming and the silencing of any pro-Israel speakers. This is achieved through constant unruly disruptions, such as what happened to the Ambassador of Israel, Michael Oren, at UC Irvine last February. Last October, students opposed to my views went as far as setting a fire in a bathroom next to the hall I was supposed to give my presentation in at Boston University. As a result, my lecture was cancelled.
In a similar vein Martin Peretz notes something else that didn't seem to bother the President:
The fully reliable and indispensable MEMRI put on the web this morning coverage of a March 30 pro-Palestinian rally in Kuwait. No, it was not merely a news report. It was beginning-to-end treatment. Yes, in staid and conservative Kuwait, for which American men and women fought. A Kuwaiti poet, a Kuwaiti member of parliament (such parliament as it is), a Kuwaiti older-looking student rabble rouser, a Kuwaiti leader of the Salafist movement, a five-year old singing about martyrdom. Poor boy. Here's a part of his song: "Allah loves the martyrs ... You have taught us what it means to be a man. All the money in the world will not make us forget."
The Obama administration won't refer to any of this anymore. Thank God the jihad is no longer with us. Ask the president.
But as Barry notes, ignoring a threat does't make it disappear:
Please note what Iran's deterrent strategy means in practice. Iran's radical Islamist regime will be able to foment terrorism and revolution against Arab governments, try to take over Lebanon, promote Hamas in fighting Israel and seeking to overturn the Palestinian Authority, and target American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, among other things.Posted by SoccerDad at April 21, 2010 4:31 AMBut if the United States or others try to do something about it, Iran will use its possession of nuclear weapons to deter them. At the same time, it will use possession of nuclear weapons to foment appeasement among regional and Western states while simultaneously persuading millions of Muslims that revolutionary Islamism is invincible and they should join a movement headed for inevitable victory.
In addition, the report spoke of how Iran backs revolutionary Islamists in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon (Hizballah, which Iran gives $200 million a year), and among the Palestinians (Hamas). What does the Pentagon report mean when it says that Iran views Hizballah "as an essential partner for advancing its regional policy objectives." Tehran is conducting a campaign to seize hegemony in the Middle East and destroy U.S. influence there. How are you going to engage and negotiate away that problem?
Martin Indyk speaks of Israel having to pull off a Czech retreat from defensible territory in order to make it easier for Obama to assemble a grand international coalition to stop Iran. But how does weakening a critical ally avert a world war? Someone should ask the Czechs how well Munich served peace in our time in the 1930s. Netanyahu in other words, is being forced to choose between committing national suicide or facing American abandonment.
Some choice.
