Of course it is all political but this is a step toward delegitimization. The Arabic-speaking, Muslim-majority, and left-wing governments that supported the resolution see this as a step not toward a compromise peace but an elimination of Israel altogether.I am not saying that this is going to happen, or that the resolution will have any actual negative impact on Israel itself. Yet what is most important is that having tasted blood, these forces will not be interested in getting less. Why should they--including the Palestinian Authority--settle for a stable two-state solution when they believe they can get far more without giving up anything?
Now here's "moderate" Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat:
Saeb Erekat, the Palestinians' chief negotiator, told Israel's Army Radio that this seemed likely to be the last chance to achieve two states and indicated that if the effort failed, there would be no choice but to insist that Israelis and Palestinians share one state.
In other words, "Give us what we want, or we'll destroy you." With this threat, or Abbas's calls for a "third intifada", there's no concept of compromise.
So while it is clear that the Palestinians don't subscribe to the idea of Jewish state - ridiculously the diplomatic world insisted that Netanyahu explicitly declare his support for a Palestinian state - making peace impossible. Israel is expected to make all the moves for peace, in order to avoid violence.
This isn't a peace process, it's an extortion process.
UPDATE: Elder of Ziyon calls it the diplomacy of fear.
Posted by SoccerDad at March 9, 2010 6:32 AMI happen to believe in the one state solution - as long as the state is Israel. I believe that those "Palestinians" who currently live there and who want to continue to live in a state defined by its Jewishness should be allowed to. Those who commit violence of any sort obviously don't so they should be compensated for their property and asked to leave.
The status quo is not good, I admit. But the realistic alternatives that would likely result from the "peace process" are worse imo, especially over the long term. In the end, for the Palestinians specifically and for the Arabs in general, it isn't that a fictional Palestine and Israel occupy the same geography, its that Israel occupies any geography and that dogma will endure unscathed by the results of any peace process.
In my mind the peace process was always "extortion" on some level or another. Perhaps now it's simply more apparent.
Posted by: merchant services at March 9, 2010 1:31 PMThe 'Jewish' State problems are self created. Did they honestly think they could 'again' take the land without the people? That another 'miracle' would happen and there was more 'land without people for a people without land' for the Zionist to expand the chauvinistic racist Jewish state.
Israel consists of a multitude of races, so how can it be a "racist" state?
You have made a point of saying Judaism is only a religion, yet refer to it as a "racist" state when its convenient. You can't have it both ways.
Posted by: Laura at March 9, 2010 7:20 PMIsrael is a racist ethnocratic state .
At least Israel did fullfill one UN Resolution. The one calling Zionism a form of racism
Posted by: sass at March 9, 2010 11:07 PM"Israel is a racist ethnocratic state".
..........................................
And what race and ethnicity would that be? Aren't you the one who repeatedly made the point that Judiasm is a religion, not a race or ethnicity? So now when it's convenient, suddenly Judaism is an ethnicity.
BTW why does this "racist" state bring in Ethiopians and has also brought in Sudanese refugees driven out by their fellow muslims.
Posted by: Laura at March 10, 2010 12:32 PMJudaism is a religion not a country. Israel is a country which has racist policies against minorities.
I hope you read this article and it makes you laugh as much as i did when i read it.

"Israel is a country which has racist policies against minorities".
........................................
Again this is a crock. Israel is a multi-racial society where everyone has equal citizenship and rescued Ethiopians who became equal members of Israeli society.
Pity the Ethiopian Jews of Israel don't agree with your " became equal members of Israeli society" statement.

There are always going to be problems of recent immigrants ajusting. The bottom line is that if Israel were a "racist" society, it would not have purposely brought these Ethiopians into the country in the first place.

If Judaiam is a ethnicity , wouldn't the Ethiopian Jews be part of the Jewish Race-proven by science???????
So what is it, multi-racial or the Jewish Race.
Using your logic the Ethiopian Jews aren't really Ethiopian but are part of the Jewish Race.
Aren't you the one who repeatedly made the point that Judiasm is a ethnicity, as well as a religion? So now when it's convenient, suddenly Judaism is an multi-racial{which is correct].
You can't have it both ways.
It is YOUR side which insists that Zionism is racism.
