Jury duty

spent yesterday at the Mitchell courthouse in downtown Baltimore waiting to be called for jury duty. I went out during lunch time. In the front of the courthouse is a statue of Cecil Calvert.

I passed under these flags; they looked neat.

In the afternoon I was empaneled for a criminal trial. What surprised me was that when the judge asked if any potential juror had been victims of violent crime or who had relatives who had been, nearly half the jurors got up. I've seen this part of the process before, but I don't recall the proportion being so high. He asked them if they thought that they could judge the case fairly and the vast majority of those were excused at that point. The judge was quickly down to a pool of no more than 30.

Previously I wrote about jury duty here.

The movies they showed yesteday were "Meet the parents" and "Pursuit of Happyness."

I was an alternate juror on a murder trial once. One guy shot another through the eye and killed him over $10.
