Putting off elections

Stop me if you heard this, Jordan's progressive monarch, King Abdullah has decided to postpone legislative elections.

In recent days, King Abdullah II, popularly perceived in the West as being among the most enlightened Middle East leaders, has dismissed the prime minister and replaced him with a palace aide and loyalist, dissolved Parliament and postponed legislative elections for a year.

This doesn't mean that he isn't among the Middle East's most enlightened leaders. It just means that the bar for enlightenment among that set is somewhat lower than it is in the West.

Ah yes, but this whole thing sounded familiar. Doesn't it?

With a giant poster of deceased leader Yasser Arafat smiling over them, members of the Palestine Liberation Organization's central council gathered here Tuesday to indefinitely extend President Mahmoud Abbas' term until credible elections can be held.

UPDATE: Treppenwitz handles this a lot more thoroughly.
