3 - new york mining disaster - bee gees
24 - in the year 2525 - zager and evans

could 11 be o what a night - 4 seasons?

Posted by: benjie at November 30, 2009 10:33 AM

1 - battle of new orleans - johnny horton

Posted by: benjie at November 30, 2009 10:37 AM

the theme is songs with years
ie. 1. battle of new orleans - "in 1815"

3. new york mining disaster has the year 1941 in title

o what a night - december 1963

Posted by: benjie at November 30, 2009 10:41 AM

2. Pictures of Lily--the Who (Is "She's been dead since 1929" the thematic part?)

23. 1999 (I don't know how much of the chorus is the title)--Prince

The theme seems to be dates.

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at November 30, 2009 10:43 AM

19) Hotel California, The Eagles
24) In the Year 2525, Zager and Evans (a song I personally associate with Thanksgiving!)

Nice job, Benjie and Yitzchak, on the theme.

Is a year mentioned in Hotel California, or do I have that one wrong?

Yitzchak, I believe you have it correct as is, that "1999" is the complete title.

8.Night Moves-Bob Seger
13.Mustang Sally-
19.Hotel California-The Eagles

Posted by: Laura at November 30, 2009 12:45 PM

13. Mustang Sally is by Wilson Pickett. Is "Running on empty" by Jackson Browne in there?

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at November 30, 2009 1:07 PM

7 - love potion # 9 - searchers

techically ny mining disaster doesn't have the year in the lyrics

is summer of 69 here?

Posted by: benjie at November 30, 2009 2:39 PM

4 - lonely boy - andrew gold

Posted by: benjie at November 30, 2009 2:48 PM

Good thinking, Yitzchak, with Running on Empty.

There's at least one Springsteen song that fits the theme, no?

Summer of '69 is also a possibility.

Though, could it be that the theme is restricted to proper and not abbreviated years?

Here is a bonus:

The papers wrote about it every day for a week

Posted by: trn at November 30, 2009 3:08 PM

Oops, Benjie mentioned Summer of '69 while I was composing my comment.

Isn't there a 1984 song?

Posted by: trn at November 30, 2009 3:15 PM

21. All in a Dream - Neil Young (Contains the lyric: ...mother nature on the run in the 1970s...or something like that...)

Posted by: Gail at November 30, 2009 5:08 PM

Isn't there a 1984 song?

By Spirit. There are probably others as well.

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at November 30, 2009 8:28 PM

There is also a Mott the Hoople song called "Born late '58"

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at November 30, 2009 9:06 PM

10 - Life in a Northern Town - The Dream Academy
12 - Running on Empty - Jackson Browne
15 - '65 Love Affair - Paul Davis
17 - Hey Nineteen - Steely Dan

trn: Hotel California has the line, "We haven't had that spirit here since 1969".

Posted by: Clayton at November 30, 2009 11:00 PM

Also - I think the title of #21 is "After the Gold Rush".

Posted by: Clayton at November 30, 2009 11:08 PM

26 - The Way It Is - Bruce Hornsby & the Range

Posted by: Clayton at December 2, 2009 11:28 PM

Here's this week's summary:

1. "The Battle of New Orleans" - Johnny Horton
2. "Pictures of Lily" - The Who
3. "New York Mining Disaster 1941" - The Bee Gees
4. "Lonely Boy" - Andrew Gold
5. I'm ridin' with Lady Luck
6. But Tschaikovsky had the news, he said
7. "Love Potion #9" - The Searchers
8. "Night Moves" - Bob Seger
9. 'Til the man down at the bank took her from me
10. "Life in a Northern Town" - The Dream Academy
11. "December 1963 (Oh What a Night)" - The Four Seasons
12. "Running on Empty" - Jackson Browne
13. "Mustang Sally" - Wilson Pickett
14. I would GLADLY lose my soul
15. "'65 Love Affair" - Paul Davis
16. Thirty years of dust and dirt on that green army tarp
17. "Hey Nineteen" - Steely Dan
18. All you've ever been, is a call every now and then, from some old pay phone
19. "Hotel California" - The Eagles
20. Man we were killin' time
21. "After the Gold Rush" - Neil Young
23. "1999" - Prince
24. "In the Year 2525" - Zager and Evans

Update:
25. Cat's foot iron claw
26. "The Way It Is" - Bruce Hornsby & the Range

Bonus: "The papers wrote about it every day for a week"

Something I noticed that might help fill in some blanks: The first 24 songs seem to be listed chronologically by the first year in the title or lyrics. (Two songs guessed so far have more than one year in them.)

Posted by: Clayton at December 3, 2009 1:05 AM

32. Rock and Roll Heart by Eric Clapton? So years that are model years of cars count? That creates some possibilities. A song with a really cute usage of dates is Captain Beefheart's (really (Robert Pete William's) "Grown so ugly":

I left Angola
1964
Go walking down my street
Knock on my baby's door
My baby come out
She asks me who I am
And I say, honey,
Don't you know your man?
She said my man's been gone
Since 1942
And I'll tell you Mr. Ugly,
He didn't look like you

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at December 5, 2009 9:16 PM

30 - might be North to Alaska by Johnny Horton
31 - I.G.Y. - Donald Fagen ("well by '76 we'll be A-OK")

Based on Soccer Dad's email, 16 must be "Riding with Private Malone" (but I still don't know the artist without looking) and 20 is "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams.

Posted by: Clayton at December 5, 2009 10:35 PM

27) The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, The Band, Joan Baez ("In the winter of '65/I was hungry, just barely alive")

Based on the reference to Wham and two separate clues from Soccer Dad, I'm guessing:

22) Prince, Little Red Corvette (1983 or 1985)
