25 years ago, my parents' friends made them a 25th anniversary party. At the party, they gave my parents a gift of a La Machine food processor. A state of the art kitchen appliance. The funny thing was, though my mother cooks, she never used it. (Or didn't use it often.)
When I got married, the food processor was still not getting used, so she gave it to us. Over the past 19 years, I've used it to make potato kugels for Shabbos.
It has been a remarkably reliable appliance. True the grating attachments broke some time ago. But it has worked just fine with a cutting blade.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that the motor seemed to be louder than it had been. All those years of chopping potatoes and onions were taking its toll. But tonight, the motor didn't seem to have the power to cut the potatoes like it once did. It kept getting stuck, unless I cut the potatoes somewhat smaller than I am used to doing..
Tonight's performance, coupled with the louder groaning of the motor, convince me, though, that our La Machine is on its last legs. At some point even cutting the potatoes especially fine won't make a difference anymore.
I think it is time to say goodbye.
So here are the last two kugels made with our classic La Machine.

I have no idea how many hundreds of kugels have been made with this food processor. I's been a great run. I'm sure that I'll be very happy with a food processor than can grate potatoes - that's something I enjoy about Pesach - but I will miss the La Machine II, which has been a part of our Shabbos preparation for so long.
Posted by SoccerDad at October 23, 2009 12:58 AMInteresting: we have a similar story with our food processor. A Kenwood, if I am not mistaken. Sorry to confess, my own familiarity with it is not that close ;-)
All I know is that it is still operational. No kugel for me, though.
Posted by: SnoopyTheGoon at October 25, 2009 8:06 AMWow! I have the same machine and you made all your kugels in that? I kept mine JUST for Pesach, so it still has some life in it. I have since moved it into the chol category. I guess I'll have to try it again. I usually end up using the blender .. hard to believe .. but I do, and it comes out great. (Or at least my husband loves it!) I throw in the onion, olive oil, egg and precut (& soaked in water) idahos. A few rounds on grind and then blend and Whalah! Pour and bake and its luscious. Thanks for the suggestion.
