Raspberry vs. rush - a postscript

With the recent controversy about Rush Limbaugh trying to become a part-owner of the St. Louis Rams, it's easy to forget that the charge he is a racist is nothing new.

Back in 1993, Washington Post columnist, William Raspberry called Rush many things including "bigot." Jeff Jacoby recalls:

In 1993, Washington Post columnist William Raspberry wrote a piece blasting Limbaugh for his "demagoguery ... his gay bashing, his racial putdowns." Like the Mississippi segregationists of his youth, Raspberry said, Limbaugh "is so good at ... tossing the raw meat of bigotry to people.... Limbaugh is a bigot."
But then Raspberry did something unheard of - he actually listened to Rush.

Eleven days later, Raspberry wrote a second column retracting the first.

"Rush, I'm sorry," he began. He confessed, to his great credit, that the earlier piece had been written in ignorance. "My opinions about [Limbaugh] had come largely from other people -- mostly friends who think Rush is a four-letter word. They are certain he is a bigot. Is he?"

Raspberry -- who by this point had listened to several hours of Limbaugh's shows and perused one of his books -- went on to answer his own question. Limbaugh might be "smart-alecky" and love "to rattle liberal cages," he might be "unrelenting in his assault on ... political correctness." But he was no more a bigot or hatemonger than Art Buchwald.

Raspberry was honest. Unfortunately in order to sink Rush Limbaugh's bid to become a part owner of the Rams, his opponents made up quotes to "prove" that he was unworthy.

The Left is very ugly. The "beautiful people" as we've seen aren't beautiful on the inside, where it truly counts.

I'd like to know why they welcomed back dog killer michael vick, but Rush is persona non grata? In other words, making speech which some find offensive is worse than horrific acts of violence as far as the hypocritical NFL is concerned. Did any of the Philadelphia Eagles players object to playing with vick? I seriously doubt it. Other players who have committed acts of violence as well as involvement with drugs have also been welcomed back to the NFL. So why is the NFL suddenly feigning as though they have such high-minded ideals? It's gotten to such a point where even sports can no longer be enjoyed because its become so politicized.

And Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton having the gall to falsely accuse Rush of making a living off of playing upon the fears of white people. These two racist and anti-Semitic creeps have been making money in the race racket for decades. Sharpton incited against the Jews of Crown Heights after a black child was accidentally hit by a car and killed. A mob of blacks attacked the visibly Jewish Yankel Rosenbaum and he was stabbed to death by one of them. And several people were killed in an arson attack on Freddy's Fashion Mart in Harlem after Sharpton incited against the store's Jewish owner. There were also attacks against Korean fruit stand owners due to the incitement of Sharpton. And we musn't forget the Tawana Brawley hoax. This bum should be in prison.
