Last May I noted a Daily Star article, which included the following:
Palestinians in Lebanon are barred from working in 70 professional vocations. They cannot work as lawyers and doctors, and cannot own or inherit property.Despite the large number of UN Resolutions which are essentially expressions of solidarity with the Palestinians, the whole issue of their rights in Lebanon doesn't seem to surface very often. An article from Al-Jazeera a few months ago, however, contains the following:
As recently as 2005, Palestinian refugees were banned from taking up employment in 70 professions. Today, the number of restricted professions stands at 20 and includes senior medical, legal and engineering careers . . .The indispensable Elder of Ziyon has just flagged an important series of articles, published last month in Al-Hayat and translated and excerpted at MEMRI, calling for "Resettlement of Palestinian Refugees" in Arab countries. It includes the following:While these restrictions were recently eased, applicants must have a valid work permit and membership of the appropriate professional representative body. Both are beyond the financial means of most Palestinian refugees.
"[My] passion for [refugee] resettlement is not a rejection of the Right of Return, but rather of the inhuman treatment of the Palestinians in the 'countries of the refugee camps.' Foremost among these countries is Lebanon, which bars the Palestinians from 72 professions, so as to prevent them from living in dignity - despite the fact that you wouldn't find such a long list of professions even on Mars ...The Al Jazeera article also noted:
The Sabra Shatila Foundation, after consultation with human rights organisations including International Lawyers Sans Frontieres and members of Lebanon's legislature, will table a draft law in parliament which promises, in the words of the foundation, to: "erase, in one vote, decades of illegal and immoral treatment of more than 10 per cent of Lebanon's population".Whatever became of that law? If there are any further developments in this story, they aren't making the headlines, are they?

Posted by Judeopundit at August 13, 2009 1:10 AMFor the Arabs, the Palestinians are a tool to be employed against Israel. Their welfare is a secondary concern in Arab eyes. For all the supposed public sympathy with them in the Arab World, when no one is looking, the Palestinians are treated like third class citizens. And because that's viewed as an Arab affair, no one cares.
Posted by: NormanF at August 13, 2009 6:18 AMRefugees are banned from working in most Western countries, too. However, West find way to repatriate refugees if they not want to give them citizenship. But there is no place to repatriate Palestinians. Israel refuse to even consider it. However, if Lebanon, considered most democratic among Arab states, does so little, what you can expect from autocracies. On the other hand, if oil-rich countries would give citizenship to Palestinians, then why not to Muslims expelled from India in same time? And that their economies could not handle. Maybe USA can give million green cards to people used to farm work in hot, arid conditions?
Posted by: Mladen at August 13, 2009 7:56 AMBecause the Pals are used as a tool they and the other Arab groups do use that to harass Israel as their goal of overthrowing and destroying the Jewish state remains. As to repatriation of the Arabs that fled, A. when you migrate for work then attempt to slaughter those employing you, deal with your bad decision be a man, when they dont want to let you return. B. When you are a resident of a nation and then attempt to work with those that seek to destroy it and your side loses, there are consequences for your loss. Be a man and deal with it. Consider yourself lucky it was the Jews and not your Arab brethern that went at you as like Assad and Saddam have shown challenge me and your village is destroyed. C Why would Arab nations impose such retrictions on their Arab brethern if they did not view the pals as tools for other nations to use, abuse, and toss out. D Where is the right of return for the 1 million jews that were foroced out of their ancesterial homes in the Arab world that they have lived in for 2000 years? E Arab treatment of the PALS is an aboration and a disgrace and really shows the arab world for what it is!!!
