They don't kill cats in the catskills

In the past I've written about Palestinian summer camps including Hello Martyr, Hello oFatah last year. (This spawned a brilliant song parody by Elder of Ziyon.)

Recently the Christian Science Monitor reported:

Teaching Islamic values and Palestinian pride are certainly among the top priorities at the "Better Tomorrow" camp; indoctrination and extremism are not, say Alian and her boss, camp director Sufian Jadallah.

So then a re-enactment of the kidnapping of Gilad Schalit constitutes "Islamic values and Palestiniann pride," not "indoctrination and extremism."

Which reminded Robert Avrech of how he spent his summers.

We played softball and basketball. Twice a day we went swimming in the lake. I can still feel the goose bumps that sprouted on my skin as I dived into the ice cold water.

We put on plays, took hikes, and we roasted kosher frankfurters over roaring fires.

Catching fireflies in a jar was kind of magical--until they suffocated.

Not quite the same thing.
