Dissin' nissenbaum

Surely you remember back in March, there was quite an uproar about Israel's conduct during Operation Cast Lead. A story in Ha'aretz, followed by one in the New York Times told of abuses committed by Israeli soldiers against Palestinian civilians.

But in the end the allegations didn't exactly pan out. Even the head of the academy where the allegations were made, excoriated the press for making too much out of them.

Still that didn't stop McClatchy's execrable Dion Nissenbaum from trying to keep the allegations alive. He dismissed the IDF's investigation of the charges that found no wrongdoing and didn't bother to report that the charges were found to be hearsay.

So it should come as no surprise when similar unsubstantiated charges from anonymous soliders surfaced this week, Nissenbaum trumpeted them on his blog.

But wait, something different happened this time. The group responsible for the charges this time was trying to get an exclusive from Ha'aretz. But Ha'aretz, burnt in March, was shy this time. Amir Mizroch of the Jerusalem Post writes:

Several days before all this, Breaking The Silence gave out their report to a wide array of foreign media, and not to the IDF to probe into itself, with the caveat that they observe the embargo until after Ha'aretz published the report first. All of which shows their original intent was to get as much uncritical worldwide publicity for their report. Legitimate, sure. Fair? Not so sure.

(It turns out that Breaking the Silence is being bankrolled by the EU and the British and Dutch embassies. Given that the EU is part of the "Quartet" doesn't that mean that the Quartet's objectivity is suspect?)

Breaking the Silence wanted uncritical attention and Nissenbaum, so swept up in his contempt for Israel, played his role faithfully. He treated the allegations as convictions because they fit his own prejudices. Truth really wasn't important. (Actually truth is important to Nissenbaum, if it has to do with a movie. He's not just biased, he's also frivolous.)

On the other hand a number of Israeli soldiers have been willing to speak out publicly, and not anonymously, to testify that they saw professional and moral behavior from their fellow soldiers. I wouldn't expect Nissenbaum to report that. Nor will he report that Human Rights Watch has been found to be ethically compromised.

For Nissenbaum, Israel employs force arbitrarily and disproportionately, Anything that confirms his view is news; anything that doesn't is ignored. Really he should be drawing a second paycheck from the PA as he is doing its work.

who are we to believe, the multiple independant investigations or the investigation by the IDF?

if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quaks like a duck- chances are its a duck.

Of course we should believe investigations conducted by groups who get their funding from saudi arabia and who receive their accounts from hamas and other palestinian "eyewitnesses." Not to mention "experts" who deny hamas uses children as human shields even though hamas has boasted about doing just that.

it is to be expecteed that the purblind orthodox in the US attack these independant NGOs.
maybe the corrupt arab regimes should use the same argument in all the reports critical of them.- 'that these groups[NGOs] who get their funding from USA and the west are not credible'.
it is what it is .it is quite obvious that the IDF indiscrimately bomded parts of gaza killing mainly innocent civillians which accounts for the number of children killed.isreal is guilty of war crimes and its a myth to believe that the IDF is a disaplined army which stands for 'purity of arms'.
palestinian civillians are not forced to become human shields by hamas. it just proves how defenceless the palestinians really are when the civiilians are protecting their leaders from attack.

You have to be kidding. You're sicker in the head than I even thought. Burn in hell for being the nazi you are. David haven't we had enough of this vile mutant? It's fine to have reasonable, rational commenters we disagree with, but this trash needs to be taken out.

I'll say it again, ass, you scumbag. “Human rights” groups which receive money from saudi arabia, headed by blatantly bias “experts” who deny hamas uses human shields even as the terror group boasts about doing just that, receive questionable “eyewitness” accounts from hamas and other palestinians who have been coerced and threatened by hamas into telling lies about the IDF, deserve their credibility to be questioned.

does hamas threaten and coerce the IDF soldiers who are speaking out?
what about those israeli who refuse to go the occupied territories to do their military service?
what about all those israelis who are speaking out about the oppression in the occupied territories?
what about israeli human rights groups who collaborate what HRW and amesty have been saying for years?

laura, your no different than a holocost denier who refuses to acknowledge the truth when confronted with overwhelming facts.

Sass - don't bother arguing with Laura, she's as much of a racist as any neo-nazi or white supremacist. She has never once engaged in a rational discussion of facts that I have seen. She goes straight to name-calling. In her eyes, anyone who doesn't support the occupation must be an anti-semite. It's the same absurd patriotism that leads to American conservatives whining about Obama being on an "apology tour." In their eyes, the state cannot be wrong - no matter what.

I have repeatedly engaged in rational discussions of facts which are ignored or dismissed.

Those who are anti-Semites are people who would deny the Jewish people the right to their own homeland and who support the ethnic cleansing of Jews. Sass is amongst them.

And conservatives are right to complain about obama's apology tour, which it exactly what it was. America has nothing to apologize for. We have been the greatest force for good in the world.
