Posted by: Clayton at July 13, 2009 12:31 PMThe theme of course seems to be the recent celebration of a certain country's 233rd birthday.
The first group is the actual day.
The second group, a group of one, seems to be Saturday, because of the day of the week on which the holiday fell this year, and in the Park, because it is a holiday with celebrations held largely outdoors.
The third group has America in the title.
The fourth group is also a group of one, and that one has not yet been identified.
The fifth group has USA in the title.
The sixth group appears to have America in the name of the group.
Posted by: trn at July 13, 2009 4:04 PMI think 5 is also called Independence Day. It is a country pop song from the mid-90's. The singer is female. Martina McBride?
Posted by: trn at July 13, 2009 4:07 PMCould one of the 6th group be by Gary "U.S." Bonds?
Posted by: Clayton at July 13, 2009 4:10 PMNice to get a turn playing again!
With Clayton's hint, I realized that #28 is Gary US Bonds, song "Quarter to Three". Most of the rest I know so far are already ID'ed, but I'll keep thinking.
I don't think I did this theme yet - last 4th of July I did the individual states for MM #50. But since you invited, here are a couple of adders for the 5th group:
25.1) "But everybody's kickin' sand"
25.2) "Did I miss the long freeway?"
12) "American Girl", Tom Petty
I'm guessing #27 is by Jay and the Americans, but not sure of the song title.
Posted by: Elie at July 13, 2009 4:33 PMSoccer Dad indicated to me that I wasn't quite right about the reasoning behind the second group.
Then I realized:
Saturday/In the park/I think it was the Fourth of July
So the song that is the second group contains not the day in the actual title, but in the fuller line in the song from which the title comes.
And good thing I used "appears" when describing the last group. It is the artist that is significant in this group, but what the artist name contains that is significant isn't limited to America. Good catch, Clayton.
Another possibility for the third group could be the American Band song. I don't think I see American Pie by Don McLean there, but maybe I'm missing it.
Maybe 20 is a song from the Grateful Dead's American Beauty album?
Posted by: trn at July 13, 2009 5:23 PMtrn is right: 5 is Independence Day by Martina McBride.
Posted by: SJ at July 13, 2009 7:45 PMMy bonus (alternate for 9) for MM 99 was "My girl, Bill" by Jim Stafford.
Here is a bonus for MM 101:
"Moving along through the fossilized crowd."
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at July 13, 2009 8:24 PM22.Surfin' USA-The Beach Boys
"But everybody's kickin' sand" is from "Livin' in the USA" by the Steve Miller Band?
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at July 14, 2009 1:40 AMCorrect Yitzchak!
Posted by: Elie at July 14, 2009 9:09 AMI keep thinking I know another USA song, but my mind keeps coming up with Back in the USSR instead.
Is there a "We are the World" kind of song that fits the theme?
Posted by: trn at July 15, 2009 10:04 AMElie's comment suggests another bonus:
"We just touched ground on an international runway"
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at July 15, 2009 10:57 AMAnother bonus:
"Will we leave this land in the hands of greed?"
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at July 15, 2009 11:01 AMtrn: "We Are the World" was by U.S.A. For Africa, so it could have gone in the last group... :)
Posted by: Clayton at July 15, 2009 1:55 PMAh, yes, Clayton. Thanks!

Hint: Yitzchak's bonus song "YG2" is the same as my bonus song "25.2"!
You're right and it's my fault. Let's make it two different versions. I'm sure Elie wanted the original version by the person who wrote the song. Let me stipulate that the answer to mine must be a cover version recorded by white trash.
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at July 17, 2009 3:17 AMHey, dibs on the "white trash" version! I used to have a major crush on her, as Soccer Dad will recall!
Posted by: Elie at July 17, 2009 9:03 AMElie, I was thinking of a male group.
