"Jewish Canadians": Criticism of Israeli Apartheid Week like McCarthyism!

Daily Muslims is undoubtedly delighted to print this:

Statement: Jewish Canadians Concerned about Suppression of Criticism of Israel

We are Jewish Canadians concerned about all expressions of racism, anti-Semitism, and social injustice. We believe that the Holocaust legacy "Never again" means never again for all peoples. It is a tragic turn of history that the State of Israel, with its ideals of democracy and its dream of being a safe haven for Jewish people, causes immeasurable suffering and injustice to the Palestinian people.

We are appalled by recent attempts of prominent Jewish organizations and leading Canadian politicians to silence protest against the State of Israel. We are alarmed by the escalation of fear tactics. Charges that those organizing Israel Apartheid Week or supporting an academic boycott of Israel are anti-Semites promoting hatred bring the anti-Communist terror of the 1950s vividly to mind. We believe this serves to deflect attention from Israel's flagrant violations of international humanitarian law.

B'nai Brith and the Canadian Jewish Congress have pressured university presidents and administrations to silence debate and discussion specifically regarding Palestine/Israel. In a full-page ad in a national newspaper, B'nai Brith urged donors to withhold funds from universities because "anti-Semitic hate fests" were being allowed on campuses. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney and Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff have echoed these arguments. While university administrators have resisted demands to shut down Israel Apartheid week, some Ontario university presidents have bowed to this disinformation campaign by suspending and fining students, confiscating posters, and infringing on free speech.

We do not believe that Israel acts in self-defense. Israel is the largest recipient of US foreign aid, receiving $3 million/day. It has the fourth strongest army in the world. Before the invasion of Gaza on 27 December 2008, Israel's siege had already created a humanitarian catastrophe there, with severe impoverishment, malnutrition, and destroyed infrastructure. It is crucial that forums for discussion of Israel's accountability to the international community for what many have called war crimes be allowed to proceed unrestricted by specious claims of anti-Semitism.

The claim that Israel has the "Fourth strongest army" is an urban legend, more often worded as the "fourth largest army." They should call themselves "Concerned Jewish Canadians who get all their Information from Yvonne Ridley."
We recognize that anti-Semitism is a reality in Canada as elsewhere, and we are fully committed to resisting any act of hatred against Jews. At the same time, we condemn false charges of anti-Semitism against student organizations, unions, and other groups and people exercising their democratic right to freedom of speech and association regarding legitimate criticism of the State of Israel.
And we uphold the right of all people to lie about the size of Israel's army.

I gather that because you failed to take exception to any of the other statements made by this group that you do therefore agree with them. After all, you have chosen to quibble over a non-sequitor, a sure sign of an intellect outmatched or determined to distract.

What I think the article is referring to is the number of troops as a percentage of the population. In this case, Israel DOES indeed rank 4th with 25 people per 1,000 actively in the military. For comparison, in China it is 13 per 1,000 and the US is only 4 per 1,000. (In case you are curious, 1-3 are North Korea, Eritrea and Switzerland).

Israel's military, ranked by number of troops, is around 35th in the world. Ranked by expenditures, they are around 15th. So you are correct that they are nowhere near the 4th largest in the world, but the article doesn't claim that. It claims they are the 4th STRONGEST which is about military capability and takes into account the following: money, numbers of troops, weapons, technology, moral, corruption, membership in international groups (like NATO), etc.

So Israel's military is relatively small in pure numbers, but it is a huge percentage of the population and they spend significantly more per troop than most militaries of that size. Also, with its alliances, intelligence and technology (plus the money it receives in aid from the US), it might very well be the 4th STRONGEST in the world, but I don't know. A more correct criticism is that the article does not say who claims that or on what basis they are determining the strength.

Anyway, like the poster above said, this is a non-sequitor and you have not addressed the main points.

This is a great sign: the growing trend to finally dismantle the wretched invention of Israel - a colonialist experiment now rightly described as a "failed state."
The world truly has passed them by. It's so sad to see the few remaining uber-racist Jews who still cling to Zionism's dwindling relevance.
And even more pitiable to witness the poor saps who still desperately cling to that thoroughly debunked misnomer "anti-semitism." A term made up by nazi's now turned backward by backward Zionist saps lost in a miasma of their own twisted, egoistic delusion
Bye, Bye Israel. The brevity of your life is measure of your iniquitous and nefarious design.

those who commented against Israel are ignorant and fools. why pity the palestinians who murder's without remorse, a people who schemes evil plans and murder. let us not forget, all muslims during september 11 rejoiced in the streets of the arab world when almost half of the world was grieving at the sight of the death of those innocent civilians. muslims is the real enemy they are the real oppressors they are murderers and psychopaths! who deserve nothing but death. its time for us to close ranks against these hate mongering people to put a stop to their bullying and idiotic demands. its time to silence those ignorant and uneducated clerics and imams who spreads murder and hate at their sermons. may God strike them with lightning and fire!

Israeli terror and propaganda is dwindling in lockstep with the doomed US economy, Israle must turn to China for help in this next century if it plans to continue its terrorism

As mentioned already, Isreal does in fact have the 4th largets (per-capita) army in the world. At least as of the time of this post.

Given that you added comments in two places, immediately after that remark and again at the end, and both were concerning that specifically, are we to assume that you are in full agreement with the rest of what was said?

I learned of student groups entirely unrelated to race, religeon, or nationality that were shut down over that whole mess.
What I found humorous about the whole thing was that so many who declare against the US for "sticking its nose into other countrie's affairs" were involved in "sticking their noses into the US's affairs" and never thought twice about it. And in every instance I ever found out about, were wrong. There were no Palastinian student unions or anything similar, nor any skinhead groups or professors or anything else.

IMO it was an organized cry of "Wolf" to try to maintain the illusion of being downtrodden much like the minority races over in the US do every 6 months. (I use the term minority loosely in that sence, as caucasians are actually in a small minority by cencus)

PS Yes I am aware that Canada is not part of the US per-se, but we don't distinguish between them much here.

I have been watching ever so closely as to how mankind is behaving amongst each other, and it seems that man has become himself a demon, nowhere in any relgion has it been mentioned to slay another human for no just cause, yet the onslaught continues to persist.
Jews, christians, sabians, magians and Muslims those who beleive in the One God and the hereafter and perform good deeds will inevitably be granted the abode of Paradise, but as for those mischiefmakers who write with their hands and say that this is the world of God, and inflict torment and transgression onto his brother, then for him awaits draughts of boiling water to pour over his head till his headskin comes off completely, and they say that they are the chosen ones of God, tell them to produce a chapter ! or even scrolls from the heavens if what they say is the truth!
I have been holing myself back for the sake of humanity, but if this continues to carry one, then indeed the punishment for the mischiefmakers will indeed be swift!

Yes Lola,
And through your colorful comment one can feel exactly the hate that we are supposed to believe is not there.
Israel is flawed, not failed. All countries are flawed.
Is it as flawed as Hammas?
Is it Hammas that you want to see in charge?

Your little piece of bile omits a few pretty obvious realities.
And reveals a great deal of ignorance.

If Hammas is so popular...why did no Arab country come to their aid?
Answer..
Because Hammas is a threat to not only to Isreal but to all the governments in the region.

The issue on the table right now is not Israel's right to exist.
I'm sorry, for Hammas and you this what it is all about but for everyone else, Israel, Fatah, Egypt and Jordan it is the details of the two state solution.

I shudder to ask but what do you expect to happen to some
6 million Israelis when in your words Israel goes 'bye bye'.

It is the venom, madam expressed in your comment that make it hard to believe in Peace.

I do know however that the efforts of ordinary Israelis and Palestinians to come closer together which is also happening
but is not something that people like you want to consider
is sure sign that Peace will happen and we Jews and Arabs,
who are cousins after all, will share the land we both love.
That land holds the bones that have carried the lives of both our
peoples and there will come a day when we both will prosper together in Peace Shalom Salaam.

And I repeat my question Lola

Where would you really like to see 6 million Jews go?

Posted by: Felipe at March 21, 2009 7:56 AM

The Zionist terror state, established by UN fiat in response to arm twisting by the US (THAT prompted by a full court press by the zionist lobby in the US to appropriate land from persons who had lived there for generations with NO recompense)has NO basis in moral law. The racist zionists are the tail wagging the US foreign policy dog, and it is time that we woke up and realized that 'Israel' has never been anything but a drain on the finances, political credibility, and moral posture of the good natured, though somewhat slow in the uptake, people of the US.
You want to support our troops? Tell your congressional representatives to DUMP THE ZIONIST TERROR STATE!

Posted by: D Jacques at March 21, 2009 8:07 AM

Israel has the right for self-defense. The right to live is the right of everyone. Israel has the right to exist.

The country is surrounded by its enemies. What you will do if you are in that position? You have to arm yourself--arm yourself so very strong that your enemies will fear you. May be in that case there will be peace.

But then its enemies has also armed themselves strong to tip the scales.

Those who are hating Israel are undiscerning-without understanding. They came from the ends of the earth to live in their ancient land. The have the same claim as the Palestinians. Israel is willing to live with the Palestinians.

But what you will do if you live in a place that is always hit by rockets. Will you take it sitting down?

The Palestinians are claiming they are righteous. Righteous! When you blow people including children to oblivion. When they use civilians to depend themselves.

The world at large condemns Israel. May be because it is hard for them to kick against the goads. It is easy to go the bandwagon.

And there are many Jews who think they are better than their leaders and criticize them. They do not know they are aiding their enemies in the process.

Did the land for peace deal achieved its goal? None. It only made the Palestinian grow stronger.

Why condemns Iran which has vowed to obliterate Israel from the map, which has said that Holocaust is a lie. A big lie repeated often in time will become truth. Iran is the biggest supporter of terrorism but where are its critics?

It calls USA as the Devil. While Iran has no qualm to use evil to advance its goal, it has the guts to call others wicked.

It continues to dupe the world that the nuclear reactor is for peaceful purposes. Tell it to the kindergartens.

Israelites mostly have bought their lands from the Palestinians and mostly those lands are not arable but in time with due diligence and hardwork they have made the desert blooms.

Palestinian should concentrate more how to work harder, how to improve their lives and not go to war. But they could not do it. They only know war.

It is prophesied that they will be like it. Read Gen.16:11-12.

Israel and Palestinians will always be at war until the return of Jesus Christ. As of now there will be no peace. It will be encompassed by armies in the day the Lord will return and half of the city will be captured,Luke 21:20 / Zech.14:1-2.

No one will believe it now as it was then before Tito burned it in 70, Luke 19:43-44.

But Israel will have a glorious end. God will avenge it, Zech.14:12-15.

As of now there will be no peace in Middle East. Israel will be continually hated by all nations. Those who hope for lasting peace in Middle East is dreaming.

Israel will fight back and their enemies will not overpower it until the the Lord will come.

I am not pro-Israel. I am prolife. If you respect others, you will be respected. The Palestinians are the ones who started the violence when Israel was given the right to live by the powers in the day.

But the fad today is you are popular if you join and criticize Israel. Be different. Criticize Iran. Criticize Hamas. Criticize those who help the Palestinians who used the aid for them to buy weapons instead of using it to improve the lives of the civilians.

Saying that Israel has the world's 4th strongest army is what exposes these "critics" as either fools, or villifiers. Soccer Dad was right to point it out. (When Israel is forced to use its whole army the entire country has to shut down. If ever there was an incentive for a country to keep the peace, that would be it.)

Apart from the falsehood about Israel's army, everything they say is at least disputable if not plain garbage; the "poverty" in Gaza is an example.

What these people are complaining about is anyone even arguing with them. The fact is that pro-Israeli speech is increasingly shut down by the VIOLENCE of the anti-Israelites. This has been seen on most campuses and more recently in the behaviour of both protesters AND the police with regard to the recent Gaza operation in most western countries.

jacques is a typical pathetic french girly man. I hope you are enjoying your country becoming an islamic state. You don't have the guts to resist the jihadists.

Posted by: Laura at March 21, 2009 12:43 PM

jacques, you ignorant eurotrash, Israel happens to be among the world leaders in hi-tech and medical advances as well as other scientific areas. They are not a drain on anyone, but are contributing to the world. Now what exactly are the muslim countries contributions besides mass bloodletting around the globe? They are worse than a drain on humanity. Yet we are giving billions to egypt and now hamas is getting American taxpayer money.

And they don't either, but there is an urban legend that Israel has the "4th largest" army in the world. So the wording "strongest" is either an attempt to make the claim in a vaguer form since the more precise version has been debunked, or a parroting of someone else's claim (which it is in any event), or carelessness. So no matter what, it indicates that the writer gets his information from propaganda and has fallen for garbage that can be refuted by anyone with an internet connection and about 45 seconds of free time. Oh yeah, and an interest in the truth. But thanks for playing.

I gather that because you failed to take exception to any of the other statements made by this group that you do therefore agree with them.

No, I think obvious idiocy doesn't need me to point it out, but I thought the "4th strongest" claim was worth commenting on because of its Ridley-ness.

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at March 21, 2009 11:43 PM

Felipe, you responded to the wrong person. Anony Mous made the comment that you are responding to. I made an objective statement about Israels military force. I want to clear this up since my name and email address are referenced. Im personally interested in military history, not Israeli policy, and beyond a general humanitarian concern for people in the world and a general feeling that a two-state solution is the way to go, Im not really informed about the specifics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Anyway, I came back on here to say that I looked up how the CIA ranks Israel in terms of military strength (capability), and they are not even in the top 10. Other sources disagree, putting Israel in the top 5, so I think it depends on who does the ranking and what military features they choose to consider.

Posted by: Lola at March 22, 2009 12:03 AM

I think it depends on who does the ranking and what military features they choose to consider

Lots of things are like that. "Strength" is a vague word anyway. Nevertheless, there is a widely spread urban legend about the size of its military. If someone wants to make a point about Israel's per capita military spending, then the words to express that thought are not hard to find. Otherwise, it is obvious what those Canadian Jews have been reading and what they have been failing to read.
