Musical monday #85

A few months ago Gail posted about Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers of all time.
I actually have heard most of these. Warning: the last two are the remakes, not the originals. I actually heard them, I think, back to back. I actually saw the issue while waiting in a doctor's office and was surprised to see that Rolling Stone had Jackson Browne writing about John Lennon. Why would that strike me as odd? And why would something like this occur to me. Benjie and Elie can't answer, since I assume they already know the answers!

While we're on the topic of the Beatles. Did you know that Liverpool Hope University now offers a Master's Degree in the Beatles? I enjoy the Beatles as much as anyone, but come on, is their lore really significant enough to be a new academic discipline?

And with those bits of music trivia out of the way, let's go back to our regularly scheduled Musical Monday.

Anyway, as you know Elie and I switch of hosting Musical Monday. But due to my traveling, he did the previous two weeks and now we're back to our alternating weeks schedule!

1) Just touch me and my troubles all fade

33) Lazy day in bed, Music in my head

I thank Elie for switching with me so I could go on vacation and handling Musical Mondays #83 and #84.

Muscial Monday #81
was, as TRN guessed, cheating songs. Why'd I do cheating songs? Well, Gail had a mental block about Billy Paul's name. She recognized "Me and Mrs. Jones" on several previous Musical Monday's, but not the singer. So I needed a MM to help jog her memory. It worked! Here are the clues and answers:

7. Not sure of title - Prince

32. Venus - I don't recall the name of the artist. (No, it's not Billy Paul this time)

Early morning, no coffee yet. Not sure if it would help with this particular list though. The songs are not from my era (early Pleistocene).

Posted by: Gail at March 16, 2009 6:13 AM

6) "Beth", Kiss
9) "Abacab", Genesis
15) "Waterloo", Abba
16) "Tempted", Squeeze
31) "Signs", group name is something like "Five Man Electric Band"

And if #32 is Venus, the original artist is Shocking Blue, but as you stated "the last two are remakes", I don't know who that would be.

Posted by: Elie at March 16, 2009 11:22 AM

Soccer Dad clarified via email that #31 is also a remake. So the Five Man Electrical Band version is *not* the one that fits the theme - which is now clear. (And thus I guess there won't be any S&G, Billy Joel, or Fleetwood Mac this time... :-( )

Two more:
1) "Lady", Styx
20) "Rapture", Blondie

Posted by: Elie at March 16, 2009 11:58 AM

5 - Roseanna - Toto
7 - Kiss - Prince (or The Art of Noise w/Tom Jones, but this one was not specified as a remake...)
10 - Roundabout - Yes
11 - Subdivisions - Rush
19 - Urgent - Foreigner

I think the remake of Signs is by Tesla, and Venus is by Bananarama.

Posted by: Clayton at March 16, 2009 12:16 PM

10. "Roundabout"--Yes
14. "Badge"--Cream
33. "Magic" or "It's Magic," something like
that. Don't know the artist.

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at March 16, 2009 12:20 PM

Also, taking a stab at the theme, it looks like one-word song titles by one-word artist names. But what significance that has to you, I don't know...

Posted by: Clayton at March 16, 2009 12:22 PM

If Clayton is right, that explains why remakes are sometimes wanted. Is 1 "Beginnings" by Chicago?

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at March 16, 2009 12:30 PM

I think that makes #33 "Magic", by Pilot.

Posted by: Clayton at March 16, 2009 12:36 PM

Is 1 "Beginnings" by Chicago?

If I was correct above, #1 is "Lady" by Styx, but I've been looking for Chicago's "Beginnings" here too! Do they have another prominent one-word song?

Posted by: Elie at March 16, 2009 12:47 PM

6.Beth-Kiss
9.Abacab-Genesis
10.Roundabout-Yes
14.Badge-Cream
16.Tempted-Squeeze
20.Rapture-Blondie
One word songs by one word named groups.

"Free" comes to mind.

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at March 16, 2009 2:08 PM

#2 aubrey - bread

Posted by: benjie at March 16, 2009 2:30 PM

12. Atlantis - Donovan

Posted by: Gail at March 16, 2009 6:15 PM

7) I know this one. Is it by Prince?

8) I know this one too. The singer is male.

16) This sounds like it could be Tempted by Squeeze.

31) This is Signs. If it is 31 and 32 that are remakes, and then 33 was added on later, then the group is Tesla.

It wasn't I who guessed the theme for #81, but thank you. I actually missed that edition.

Is there a way to subscribe to subsequent comments on posts here?

Posted by: trn at March 16, 2009 6:29 PM

Groups that are probably here somewhere, but I haven't thought of specific songs yet:
- Journey
- Heart
- Queen
- Rush
- Sting

I assume the word "the" before a group name, even if optional, disqualifies the group?

Posted by: Elie at March 16, 2009 8:32 PM

Whoops. I missed that someone already found a Rush song for #11.

Posted by: Elie at March 16, 2009 8:37 PM

Elie,

Clayton ID'd the Rush song. I forgot Journey and Sting.

I had meant to check up if it was Starship or The Starship, but I didn't.

And TRN, sorry but there doesn't appear to be a way to subscribe to comments.

Posted by: soccer dad at March 16, 2009 8:39 PM

Whoops. I missed that someone already found a Rush song for #11.

Posted by: Elie at March 16, 2009 8:41 PM

With the one-word theme, can we also assume one song per artist?

Posted by: Clayton at March 17, 2009 1:00 AM

Other one-word artist-names: Nirvana, War, Spirit, Argent, Foghat, Santana, Steppenwolf, Cher, Madonna

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at March 17, 2009 2:08 AM

#32 would be Bananarama for the remake.

trn: In #8, for what it's worth, the lyric sounds similar to a lyric from Rod Stewart's "Young Turks", which obviously wouldn't fit the theme. That was my initial thought when reading the lyric.

As for Queen, I would have expected to see "Flash", but I don't see any lyrics that would fit the bill. I'll have to look further tomorrow.

Posted by: ral315 at March 17, 2009 4:29 AM

Here's a half dozen more to guess. All are by other artists than listed in previous comments. Apologies if any of these songs (or groups) are in the original set of quotes:

34) "What a day, a year, a laugh it is"

35) "There's not even breathing room between pleasure and pain"

36) "I feel alright, mamma I'm not jokin', yeah!"

37) "You better leave this morning, leave today"

38) "I'm on fire, burning with the question in my mind"

39) "Now that the world isn't ending"

Posted by: Elie at March 17, 2009 2:03 PM

34 - Dreamer - Supertramp
36 - Smokin' - Boston

Posted by: Clayton at March 17, 2009 2:45 PM

Elie,

Is the title of Queen's bicycle song Bicycle?

Soccer Dad,

Ah well. Thanks though!

Yitzchak,

I believe Madonna has a song titled Angel.

Ral315,

I'm thinking the lyrics go something like, "Never them them shoot us down/Never let them make us frown/Never let them run around/And desert us."

Posted by: trn at March 17, 2009 11:48 PM

Scratch everything I've said about "Never let them shoot us down." In the middle of the night, I remembered more of the song I had in mind and realized the lyrics of which I had been thinking use the format "Never gonna/you" and not "Never let them/us." The title of that song must be something like Never Gonna Give You Up. So, I don't know what song #8 is at all, and I therefore also don't know that the singer of whatever song it might be is male.

Posted by: trn at March 18, 2009 7:08 AM

The title of that song must be something like Never Gonna Give You Up

Oh please, don't open the door for Rickrolling in this blog! Our good host has got enough trouble with the pro-Hamas trolls...

Posted by: Elie at March 18, 2009 11:52 AM

Elie, Is the title of Queen's bicycle song Bicycle?

Good option! But I think the title is "Bicycle Race". There may be another Queen song here.

Posted by: Elie at March 18, 2009 3:41 PM

Oh no! The "Rickrolling" was unintentional! Please forgive me.

Thanks for the link, Elie. Man, that is funny.

Rickrolling and Hamas-trolling, eh? Perhaps we can use the Rickrolling concept to trick the pro-Hamas trolls into facing reality.

Thinking of single-word titles is HARD!

Posted by: trn at March 18, 2009 6:22 PM

13 - Headlong - Queen

Posted by: Clayton at March 18, 2009 8:44 PM

8 - Never - Heart

Posted by: Clayton at March 18, 2009 8:56 PM

35 - Cryin' - Aerosmith

Posted by: Clayton at March 18, 2009 9:48 PM

38 - Paradox - Kansas

Posted by: Clayton at March 18, 2009 10:07 PM

Is Nirvana's song titled Nevermind or Never Mind? Or is it only the album name?

Posted by: trn at March 18, 2009 10:27 PM

Wow TRN, you got my obscure Kansas song! Excellent!

Posted by: Elie at March 19, 2009 9:16 AM

Sorry, meant that last comment for Clayton! For TRN: It looks like Nevermind is a Nirvana album name, not an individual song?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nevermind#Track_listing

Posted by: Elie at March 19, 2009 9:23 AM

Elie: Thanks. I've been home sick from work for a couple of days and have had a lot of free time to listen to all of the one-word band/song combinations I can find in my music collection.

Nirvana has several one-word songs, but if one of them is in the list I haven't heard it.

Posted by: Clayton at March 19, 2009 6:26 PM

Refuah shleimah, Clayton.
