Iran is having a conference on Palestine at the moment. Almost every headline at Fars News is about it, including the obligatory story about a "Jewish Rabbi," i.e. a Neturei Karta type, who agrees 100% with the Khomeinists. Ahmadinejad explains:
The Islamic republic news agency quoted him as saying the world looked at Zionism not as a religion but as a "manner" full of evil and satanic objectives and means and said the basic philosophy of the Zionist regime's existence was to scatter corruption, aggression and expansionism throughout the world. The Supreme Leader weighs in:
Now 60 years have passed since the occupation of Palestine. During this period all material means of power have been in the service of the usurpers, including money, weapons and technology, as well as political and diplomatic initiatives and the giant empire of news media and networks. Yet despite these staggering and far-reaching satanic efforts, the usurpers and their supporters have not only failed to solve the problem of the Zionist regime's illegitimacy, but it has grown more complicated with time.Besides all the usual swill, lo and behold, here is something I don't remember seeing before: an Iranian news article that actually refers to "Elders of Zion":The intolerance shown by the Western and Zionist media and pro-Zionist governments toward even the mere posing of any question concerning the Holocaust-which served as an excuse for the usurpation of Palestine-and research on the topic, is one of the signs of this nervousness and uncertainty.
Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says that the creation of Israel was aimed at placing Islamic states under Zionist influence. There's blog fodder at that there conference . . .In a speech delivered at the international conference in support of Palestinians in Tehran on Wednesday, Larijani said frequent tensions in the Middle East clearly show that the elders of Zion planned to preoccupy Islamic countries with daily struggles.
The Majlis speaker criticized the US for its support of Israel and said making repeated visits to the region and holding conferences in support of Israel will not shake the will of the Palestinian resistance.
"Today the world awaits a change in domineering policies and strategies," he added.
"One look at these past adventurisms [by Israel and the US] shows that the vigilance of Palestinians has thwarted Israeli-US plots and that the Palestinian resistance is on an evolutionary path," the Iranian official continued.
Larijani told the participants of the conference titled 'Palestine: Manifestation of Resistance, Gaza: Victim of Crimes' that he hoped the summit would help the people of Palestine.
"The Palestinian crisis is a serious one with almost no precedent. Imprisoning millions of people in Israeli jails and turning millions of others into refugees over the past 60 years is but a portion of Israel's atrocities in Palestine," Larijani added.
Legal experts, politicians and religious figures have come together for the conference to discuss ways to bring Israel's top political and military leaders to trial over the crimes they committed during the war on Gaza. [...]

Sure. I, personally, can keep about 274 of them under one thumb on a good day.
Posted by: SnoopyTheGoon at March 4, 2009 3:09 PMI think that there are really no "good guys" or "bad guys" in the Isreali-Palestinian conflict. I bet for every comment the Iranians make about Zionists trying to kill all Muslims, or than Jews = The Great Satan (tm), you can get an equal number of US senators saying that Islam is a violent, idolatrous "Muhammadist" cult, which, believe it or not, is not true.
I feel that solution to this conflict is not the victory of Jews over Muslims or vice versa, nor should it be the immediate cessation of hosilities (because we've seen that that never lasts). I think that people need to realise that while tradition and heratige are important, using that as an excuse to take over someone's country or fire rockets at said conquerors is just silly. I think people need to take down the walls of ethnicity and religion that have been there since the inception of these religions, and see each other as human being that are being egged to fight each other over trivial differances.
Just my opinion, that I know will never be followed out. Just want to say it.
P.S. I don't support either Isreal or Palestine in this conflict; I believe all involved parties (including us, in the "West") share some of the blame for the inflamed situation.

Posted by: suu at March 4, 2009 8:14 PMAPARTHIED in the Middle East
It aparthied plain and simple. In the West Bank Israeli are allotted 20 times as much water as Palestinians. Israeli realx next to swimming pools of water while the Palestinians are force to drink polluted water. How more basic can you get?
Israel is a nation of racial supremicists. The vast majority of the Israeli believe that they are a superior race of people compared to their neighbors on every side. Netanyahu really believes that Jewish lives are more valuable than Arab lives. He weaves this idea into his speeches. He says that since there are only about 15 million Jews and 800 million Arabs then a Jews life is worth at least 53.33333 Arabs. this is the foundation of their foreign policy. Thats why they kill 50 women and children for ever Israeli who is killed enforcing Aparthied.
Its all about people who think they are better than everyone else in the world. They even believe God thinks they are better than everyone else in the world.
Ethnic Racists are destroying the world and killing millions tro preserve their stupid fantasies.
Posted by: larry at March 4, 2009 8:49 PMsuffering is not good for either side. but the fact of the matter is the Palestinians are hostage to the will of Iran, who happens to be the most overt in its help, among others, in its fight to destroy its religious and ideological rival Israel. Using the argument the Palestinians were there first and thus the Jews are invaders to legitimize intifada and Iran intervention is a false pretense considering that the place has been inhabited since biblical times. how far back can you go with those arguments? surely the land was at least "Jewish territory" at one point. Lets widen the scope. Who was it that actually partitioned the Arab world into its relative current form? Why not argue about that? Read about the fall of the ottoman empire after world war one. every middle eastern Arab nation" is scarcely older than Israel.
The bigger story is Iran and it influence in the region. What we are really watching is the results of foreign nations assisting a small but powerful group to act as proxy in its fight vs. the Jews. At the expense of the Palestinians. Apparently Arabs working at the behest of Persians under the guise of assisting the intifada, killing Palestinians through their actions is more palatable than Jews killing Palestinians who attack them. A fact blissfully ignored in much of the world. Now of course the west has some culpability her as well. Many policies have not helped and have exacerbated the situation. But like it or not the state of Israel does exist and while the hand of Iran is allowed to do its will in the region, sadly, the state of Palestine will remain a mirage.

PS if the palestinians had gone the way of gandi the state of palestine would have been here long ago.
Posted by: joe at March 4, 2009 9:02 PMThe worst part is that when the s*** really does hit the fan, _I_ will likely be drafted to fight in some place on the opposite side of the planet! I'm technically inclined, an inventor, and most importantly, a SINGLE MALE 30-year-old.
I fear the day that Israel and it's neighbors go atomic at each other. It'll ironically be worse for the Russians since they'll have the worst fallout and social upheaval. It'll still be no picnic for anyone else. :(
to Larry, "Israel is a nation of racial supremicists." Apartheid???
In Israel, Jews are a majority, but the Arab minority are full citizens with voting rights and representation in the government. Under apartheid black South Africans could not vote and were not citizens of the country in which they are the overwhelming majority of the population.
The situation of Palestinians in the territories ? won by Israel in a defensive war forced upon it by its neighbors?is different. The security requirements of the nation, and a violent insurrection in the territories, have forced Israel to impose restrictions on Arab residents of the West Bank that are not necessary inside Israel?s pre-1967 borders. The Palestinians in the territories, typically, dispute Israel?s right to exist whereas blacks did not seek the destruction of South Africa, only the apartheid regime.
If Israel were to give Palestinians full citizenship, it would mean the territories had been annexed. No Israeli government has been prepared to take that step.
Larry, Israel is NOT an Apartheid!
Apartheid was a legal system that enforced discrimination, segregation and oppression based on skin color. Israel is the opposite. Its legal system enforces equal civil and political rights for all citizens regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.

Israel became a nation about 1300 BCE, two thousand years before the rise of Islam.
The Palestinians already have three nations - Jordan, PA, and Gaza. That they have made of sewer of the latter two (PA, GAZA) is their own fault. That they have not made a sewer of the first (Jordan) is to the credit not of the Palestinians, but of the Hashemites.
