Musical monday #81

I'm sorry but Musical Monday #81, is not yet ready to go. Hopefully, later today, though more likely overnight. In the meantime, here's background to Seasons in the Sun. You wouldn't believe who recorded it first - but never released it.

OK, here's the first installment. You know the drill, guess the songs and the common element. No googling. (Not surprisingly) a lot of these are country songs.

1) You'll cry and cry and try to sleep
2) who's car is parked next door
3) Why does she get the best of you
4) Leaving me alone and hurt
5) 'bout your plans to make me blue
6) You hit once, Then break away clean
7) Then somebody hangs up when you answer the phone
8) Saw your head turned a bit too far to the right now
9) But that look's all over you
10) And I just happened to find your name and number...
11) With flaming locks of auburn hair
12) Every form of refuge has a price
13) Till her husband came clean with the help of Jim Beam
14) Over the river where we weren't well-known
15) Take a chance tonight and untie the knot
16) And I dare not drown my sorrows in the warm glow of your wine
17) Now I won't need no chains to tie me down
18) No one gets to get it for free
19) Your mama and daddy say it's a shame
20) Cause she's got her own obligations and so, and so do I
UPDATED:
(I think that 23 and 24) are pretty sick, actually)
21) Maybe it's time that you earned
22) Call up, ring once, hang up the phone
23) But I was proud to go, And do my patriotic chore
24) And that ain't too cool
25) I put 2 and 1 together and you know that's not an easy sum
26) A room full of noise and dangerous boys
27) Cause I ain't quite as dumb as I seem
28) So if you don't wanna cry like I do
29) A-leavin' me home with a hand full of bills
30) And the storm will wreck our home
31) You mustn't think you failed me
32) The Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal
33) And he knows that she knows
34) I got up to wash my face
35) Oh, what a birthday surprise,
36) Why'd you slip around secretly
37) I've never called and checked your story
38) I've been listening to your dreams and getting very low
39) I bought a novel, some perfume
40) tracks too small for Andy to make.
41) I pour myself a drink somewhere.
42) Through these walls so thin
43) Finally the waiter said, "Should I bring another chair."
44) I never see his face in the early morning light
45) And would you cry if I told you that I lied
46) She said, "Home James" and he hit the gas
47) Told me you were goin' out for a soda pop
48)I just threw my last bottle at the jukebox
49) I've got to admit I do some looking too

Here are the answers to Musical Monday #79. As Gail noticed, it was a list of the top songs of the 70's. It was inspired by Elie's Musical Monday #70. It's also 30+ years since Elie and I became friends.

Benjie, however, pointed out that they were #1 songs of the 70's apparently ranked by weeks at #1, but not the actual Billboard top 70. This was my source, so if I mislead anyone, sorry about that.

Originally I was going to do the top 50 of 1979, but the results were just too awful.

I was informed that I gave the wrong song for #16. And yes, now that I think about it, it is "Silver Threads and Golden Needles."

Posted by: Gail at February 16, 2009 11:08 AM

Everything I know so far has been ID'd, but I'll take a guess at the theme. Are these all songs about cheating, or being cheated on?

Posted by: Clayton at February 16, 2009 12:21 PM

Is "I just started hating cheating songs today" in there somewhere?

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at February 16, 2009 12:25 PM

This is the first time that I cannot guess even one lyric.

Posted by: benjie at February 16, 2009 2:36 PM

#7 is "When You't In Love With a Beautiful Woman", by (I think) Dr. Hook. Which lends credence to the "cheating" theory, as does the hint about Country songs.

So then #18) is "Him" by Rupert Holmes, and there's a couple of others I'll look for.

Answers to last week's MM #80 will be up soon - but as a separate post. You'll see why!
