For many years I used to identify with the pain people went through during the 2nd world war in particular the Jewish and East European population. However, the past few years I have become increasingly frustrated by the way media uses the suffering caused by Fascism to excuse the Israeli behaviour in Lebanon and against Palestinians and treat any criticism which may be expressed against certain behaviour of some Jews as anti Semitic and hence subject to imprisonment. Europe must stop Israel and change their behaviour if America is unwilling to do so.

Well Israel reacts to violence with violence, but can the blame be put on Israel alone? Nope, still Israel is stupid, like everyone else. Not thinking much how to end the conflict, everyone prefers to save their own skin and to hell with everybody else.

What must be understood that in face of adversity such as Israel faces, it's very hard to think clearly. You are being attacked brutally and mercilessly and in horror or in wish to save yourself you bash out to stop your suffering inflicted by others.

I used to feel Israel was the victim just defending itself but after learing more and following the conflict through news sources outside of the US. They spew hate and racism on the blogs. But when you point out that there are many palistinean Christians in Gaza suffer the same as muslims...then it changes to hating arabs...which is just racist. I can't see the feasability of passing the responisbility of Isreal's security off on a third party if Isreal is going to continue taking homes, land, invading neighbors...etc. I would not think you could expect peace in that situation no matter who was in charge of security. Finkelstein is neither credible nor creditable. I live in Israel and actually see what goes in here, day in and day out. When Finkelstein can say things like: "They send a Sherman tank to a playground and torch children . . ." you really have to wonder what planet he is living on. Israeli soldiers do no such thing.

On the other side of the ledger, though, we have countless instances were Palestinian "freedom fighters" have blown themselves up - and sent their children to incinerate themselves in Israeli Pizzerias, commuter busses, discos, hotels, etc.

Hey, if these are the folks whose word you trust and want to have living on your doorstep, fine. Excuse me,but was not the 6 day war an attack on Israel by other Middle Eastern parties? We don't see Israel sending out suicide bombers after Muslims, do we? Also, we should never forget that, in 2006, the people of Gaza elected Hamas to be their government; they are not intruders. In 2007, a small Fatah Army tried to take over but were successfully driven out by Hamas. Our own Declaration of Independence states that "...governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed..." I.e. it is the people of Gaza who have the right to decide who will govern them - not the people of Israel of the people of the United States. For us to call Hamas and Hesbollah "terrorists" is hypocritical name calling. We ourselves deliberately slaughtered hundreds of thousands of German and Japanese civilians during WWII. We will have to talk with their leaders at some point if we hope to have any success in "bringing peace to the Middle East."

Howard. At last some intelligence on the issue. I agree that the response by Israel was extremely harsh. The Palistinians were totally out gunned. However, if you play with with a rattle snake, don't complain when it bites you. Hamas has to bear a great deal of responsibility for it's own destruction. To this date it still has not stopped shooting at Israel. Instead of condemning Israel there needs to be suggestions on how to handle this problem in the future. The Palistinians need to throw out Hamas or at least indicate that they do not want this behavior to continue in the future. Hamas acts like children who do not get their way or enough attention, so they misbehave and the world starts to pay attention. If Hamas continues along this line, they will die. As to deaths in war, that is the definition of war. Force Hamas to fight away from the populated areas and many less people would die. Hamas hides it's weapons among the population, believing that the world will scream when Israel attacks back. Beside political assassinations, what should the Israeli response be?

I have no proof that 420 Arab children were killed in Gaza, but I have relied on the figures quoted by the world�s media. Whether they are authentic or not, I just don�t know.

If the figure was not 420, maybe it was 320, or 220, or just 120. Perhaps even only twenty. And, I have no evidence of how old these children were. Some were undoubtedly babies or infants � as I have seen photographs of the bodies, but others could well have been eight, or ten � perhaps even teenagers.

What I do know and what I am very clear about is that the killing of even twenty children � whether infants or not, was a crime as they could have posed no threat to your powerful tanks, planes and helicopter gunships.

I also know that my religion � I am Jewish � expressly forbids such killings. So does international law. So does the United Nations. And so does Christianity.

The Geneva Conventions on Human Rights prohibits such unlawful behaviour and anyone alleged guilty of such a war crime must, by international law, be brought before the International Criminal Court to answer such charges.

That is the law and that is democracy and that is how our society, and your society, works. Otherwise, there is no democracy, no justice and no law and we could all just kill those we wanted out of the way or who were just inconvenient.

There's too much that has been posted since the last time I was here (class), so I'll just address the last post made by James:

I believe, sir, that you have absolutely no grasp of actual historical events. You are suffering from assumptions about events and revisionist history (as are many here).

Henry Ford, being the product of the late nineteenth century into the radioactive twentieth century, was antisemitic. This is true.

As far as hating black people? That's actually untrue. As far as his personal racist superiority, most nineteenth and early-mid twentieth century white men of power of course thought of themselves as superior. However, Henry Ford has been credited as largely creating the American black middle class. His payment of $5 a day was revolutionary and transformed not only Michigan, and much of the rust belt states, but also transformed a class that was absolutely underprivileged into having a chance at a decent living. This didn't happen unconsciously because capitalism is so great or any of that crap, but because he had made no fundamental effort to discriminate like most employers at that time.

As far as Israel. Let's look at the facts. Jewish migrants were flooding Palestine for decades before the Holocaust, and then after WWII they forcefully made the next push to establish the Jewish state. That's all fine and dandy, but revisionist history (read: mainstream history) omits the suffering of the displaced Palestinian peoples from then on. If it smells like a refugee camp, looks like a refugee camp, and the people living there were forced there with no place else to go because of a foreign (or native, but foreign in this case) power, then guess what: it's a refugee camp. And they have been living in these small, crowded camps and cities, mostly occupied for decades upon decades until only 2005 (Gaza), and their quality of life has been disregarded by not just Israel but the West as a whole.

It's like the perfect storm to radicalize a people. It's not their religion that is making them shoot rockets, but it is their religion that has kept them whole while their land, livelihood, and identity have been stripped away. If my home state was invaded by a foreign power, bent on extracting all of the area possible for its own people to settle, while I was pushed further and further into an isolated and dreadful (and shrinking) piece of land by these same people, I would fight back. Does this remind you of anything? Oh yeah, what the United States (and the European powers) did to the Native Americans from 1500 to present.

Like the Native Americans, I don't think the Palestinians are going to go quietly.

Prior to the Jews returning to their land, the current palestinians were living in lebanon, Iran and Syria. Israel became a nation about 1300 BCE, two thousand years before the rise of Islam. The people of modern day Israel share the same language and culture shaped by the Jewish heritage and religion passed through generations starting with the founding father Abraham. Since the Jewish conquest in 1272 BCE, the Jews have had dominion over the land for one thousand years with a continuous presence in the land for the past 3,300 years.

After the Romans conquered Jerusalem about 2,000 years ago, Jewish people were expelled and dispersed to the Diaspora, and the Land of Israel was ruled by Rome, by Islamic and Christian crusaders, by the Ottoman Empire, and by the British Empire.

Throughout centuries Jews prayed to return from the Diaspora to Israel. During the first half of the 20th century there were major waves of immigration of Jews back to Israel from the Arab countries and from Europe. In 1948 Jews reestablished their sovereignty over their ancient homeland with the establishment of the modern State of Israel.

It was only after the Jews re-inhabited their historic homeland of Judea and Samaria, that the myth of a Palestinian nation was created and marketed worldwide. Jews come from Judea, not Palestinians. There is no language known as Palestinian, or any Palestinian culture distinct from that of all the Arabs in the area. There has never been a land known as Palestine governed by Palestinians. Palestinians are Arabs indistinguishable from Arabs throughout the Middle East. The Palestinian National Charter adopted by the PLO states this fact in the first article (See the covenant)

The area called Palestine included the territories of present day Israel and Jordan. Under Lausanne agreement of 1923 Turkey transferred all claims to Palestine to mandatory power Britain. In 1922 Britain allocated nearly 80% of Palestine to Transjordan. In 1947 UN partitioned this remaining land into two states, a second Arab state, Palestine, and Israel. The great majority of Arabs in greater Palestine and Israel share the same culture, language and religion. The Arabs in the area began identifying themselves as part of a Palestinian people in 1967, two decades after the establishment of the modern State of Israel. Virtually all the Arabs in Judea, Samaria and Gaza in the West Bank of Jordan River have complete autonomy under the rule of the Palestinian Authority.
The UN partition plan of 1947 was rejected by all the Arab countries. Arab leadership in Israel and in the countries surrounding Israel, planned a Jihad, holy war, against Israel and encouraged the Arabs to leave Israel promising their return after they purge the land of Jews. The great majority of Arabs left without ever seeing an Israeli soldier (see article and Arab sources that describe what happened during the war of 1948 that caused the Palestinian refugee problem).

During 1940's through 1950's nearly ALL the Jews had to flee from Arab countries to avoid persecution and pogroms. The number of Jewish refugees from Arab countries is estimated to be a million. This number is greater than the number of Arab refugees who left Israel in 1948, estimated as 343,000 (see Peters' book cited below).

Most of the Jewish refugees from Arab countries rapidly integrated into the modern society of Israel. This, despite the fact that Israel is a tiny country (about size of New Jersey) without any of the world's richest resources of petroleum in Arab countries. Today, the majority of the people in Israel are the descendants of Jews from Arab countries. (European Jews and their descendants constitute less than half the population of Israel).

The development of the Jewish community under British mandate led to economic growth in the region providing job opportunities for Arab workers. Consequently, the Arab population of Palestine swelled by the influx of Arab immigrants from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and other Arab countries until 1947 (The trend of Arab migration into Israel to find a job continues to the present day). While the British forces limited Jewish immigration, they allowed free entry of Arab migrants. The UN agency UNRWA defined a "Palestinian refugee", as any Arab who stayed in the country for two years prior to 1948. Thus, UNRWA included in their statistics migrant workers greatly swelling the ranks of so called "Palestinian refugees" (for best reference on the subject see: From Time Immemorial: The Origins of the Arab-Jewish Conflict over Palestine by Joan Peters).

Arab refugee problem was created by the seven Arab countries that attacked Israel in 1948. Arab refugees were intentionally not integrated into the Arab lands to which they fled, despite the fact total territory of Arab countries is about 700 times greater than that of Israel. Out of about 100,000,000 refugees since World War II, theirs is the only refugee group in the world that has not been absorbed into their own peoples' lands. Arab nations still maintain generations of the descendants of the refugees in so called "refugee camps" under squalid conditions with the hope that someday they will dislodge the Jews in Israel. The money spent by the Arab countries on armaments would be sufficient to build houses for all so called "refugees". Arab countries should be encouraged to care for their poor population instead of spending their richest resources in the world on armaments and development of terrorist groups such as Osama Bin Laden from Saudi Arabia.

Since 1948, after three generations the descendants of the Arab refugees are still called "refugees" and are supported by UN "refugee" funds! With the highest birth rate in Arab countries this population has now grown to about four million. In negotiations, Arab leadership requests the "right of return" of this mass of millions into the tiny land of Israel. The settlement of millions of Arabs in Israel would immediately eliminate Israel as a Jewish state. This is the real aim of the Arab countries, to achieve by supposedly "peaceful" means what they could not achieve by unceasing violence in whole scale wars and daily terrorism.

The responsibility for keeping the Arab population who are descendants of the Arab refugees, rests only on the shoulders of the Arab countries that created the problem by attacking Israel in 1948.

"Israel's actions in Gaza are justified under international law, and Israel should be commended for its self-defense against terrorism. Article 51 of the United Nations Charter reserves to every nation the right to engage in self-defense against armed attacks. The only limitation international law places on a democracy is that its actions must satisfy the principle of proportionality.

Since Israel ended its occupation of Gaza, Hamas has fired thousands of rockets designed to kill civilians into southern Israel. The residents of Sderot -- which have borne the brunt of the attacks -- have approximately 15 seconds from launch time to run into a shelter. Although deliberately targeting civilians is a war crime, terrorists firing at Sderot are so proud of their actions that they sign their weapons.

When Barack Obama visited Sderot this summer and saw the remnants of these rockets, he reacted by saying that if his two daughters were exposed to rocket attacks in their home, he would do everything in his power to stop such attacks. These despicable tactics -- targeting Israeli civilians while hiding behind Palestinian civilians -- can only work against moral democracies that care deeply about minimizing civilian casualties. They never work against amoral nations such as Russia, whose military has few inhibitions against killing civilians among whom enemy combatants are hiding.

The claim that Israel has violated the principle of proportionality -- by killing more Hamas terrorists than the number of Israeli civilians killed by Hamas rockets -- is absurd. First, there is no legal equivalence between the deliberate killing of innocent civilians and the deliberate killings of Hamas combatants. Under the laws of war, any number of combatants can be killed to prevent the killing of even one innocent civilian.
Second, proportionality is not measured by the number of civilians actually killed, but rather by the risk posed. This is illustrated by what happened on Tuesday, when a Hamas rocket hit a kindergarten in Beer Sheva, though no students were there at the time. Under international law, Israel is not required to allow Hamas to play Russian roulette with its children's lives.

While Israel installs warning systems and builds shelters, Hamas refuses to do so, precisely because it wants to maximize the number of Palestinian civilians inadvertently killed by Israel's military actions. Hamas knows from experience that even a small number of innocent Palestinian civilians killed inadvertently will result in bitter condemnation of Israel by many in the international community.

Israel understands this as well. It goes to enormous lengths to reduce the number of civilian casualties -- even to the point of foregoing legitimate targets that are too close to civilians.

Until the world recognizes that Hamas is committing three war crimes -- targeting Israeli civilians, using Palestinian civilians as human shields, and seeking the destruction of a member state of the United Nations -- and that Israel is acting in self-defense and out of military necessity, the conflict will continue."

Egypt and Jordan have both signed peace treaties with Israel, and in the years since both countries' economic prosperity (as compared to the years before such treaties were signed) has grown tremendously. Coincidence? I think not. Those countries that have chosen to preach AND practice peace with Israel have benefited from this wise decision. However, why is it so hard to understand why? Instead of trying to right the wrongs committed in the past, Israel insists on always retaliating with massive force - thereby radicalizing yet another generation of Palestinians each time. It's not necessary, and ultimately works against Israel since they just essentially create a self sustaining cycle of violence and madness. You can't pacify an entire group of human beings with just force, no matter how many times you try.

You miss the point. Don't forget that Israel retaliated against both Egypt and Jordan with massive force - numerous times, at that - but the difference between these sovereign states and the "Palestinian" people is that Egypt and Jordan have relatively stable governments, and they practice what they preach. They both realized that peace with Israel was not caving in, but rather ensuring their OWN success in the global society.

This is precisely the problem. If the "Palestinian" leaders (internationally recognized as terrorists, but that doesn't seem to concern you so I won't belabor that point) can come to the table, as did Egypt and Jordan, make sacrifices (yeah - real sacrifice to keep your population from firing rockets at civilians) in exchange for receiving things from the other side (e.g. international recognition, massive foreign investment, tourism dollars, perpetual peace and security, to name but a few), then there would be a peace treaty signed in no time. But, unlike Egypt and Jordan, the "Palestinians" simply do not honor their commitments. It has nothing to do with the justifiable violence the Israelis engage in against them, as stated above, because this was the case with both Egypt and Jordan. It does have to do with the will of the "Palestinian" people to end this dispute, once and for all, like human beings in a modern, global society, instead of like savages.

The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict is not analogous with South Africa. The people in South Africa were one sovereign and kept separate because of racist idealogy. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict involves one sovereign involved in a land dispute with hostile enemies that want to destroy it. It is ok for any sovereign power to keep hostile non-citizens out of its country and keep its borders secure. That is not apartheid. It is basic international law.

Regarding Gaza, I can tell you first hand ( I was there)No one wants that piece of land.
The British had problems in Gaza during their Mandate. The Egyptians had problems controling Gaza from 1948-1967. The late Egyptian president Sadat, did not want Gaza as part of the peace deal of 1978. The Israelis had hard time with Gaza.( I was there:). The only reason the IDF keeps taking action and entering Gaza is the secutity issue.
The problem will never go away till the Palestinians stop educating their kids to hate Israel.
Gaza is the only place in the world that Mickey Mouse wears an explosive belt and talks about suicide bombing and 72 virgins.
By the way, I still don't know what female sucide bombers get?
The only solution I see is a two state solution.
But I do not see it happening until you solve the Iranian problem.
