Elie and I switch off most weeks offering you lyrics united by a theme. Please check out Elie for last week's solutions later today.
I hope you'll forgive me if this isn't especially creative and because some of the songs are absolutely wretched. When you find out what I originally intended, I think you'll be grateful that I chose this instead!
1)Rollin' at sea, adrift on the water
2)And I'm glowin' in the dark
3)Let me pour you a good long drink
4)Give me more, drag me across the floor

21) And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
22)he's so nervous avoiding all the questions.
23)Until the night closes in

28) I could never see tomorrow, but I was never told about the sorrow.
29)Really want to go with you

Theme: 70s songs, back when Gail listened to the radio
Posted by: Gail at February 2, 2009 9:03 AMI'm guessing the theme more specifically, is the top 50 songs of the 70s. Some of the rest:
9) "Joy to the World", Three Dog Night (should the quote have "single" before "word"?)
13) "Silly Love Songs", Sir Paul McCartney
17) "Killing Me Softly", Roberta Flack, originally by Lori Lieberman who wrote it about the author of #25, the connection you reference.
20) "Staying Alive", Bee Gees (BTW, when that song came out, I used to think the line was "the New York Times or Spider-Man"!!)
24) "Tie a Yellow Ribbon", Tony Orlando and Dawn
25) "American Pie", Don Mclean
29) "My Sweet Lord", George Harrison
A few more of the "absolutely wretched" ones (OK, they weren't *that* bad, especially when you compare them to hip-hop...)
23) "Kiss You All Over", I forget the artist
27) "Hot Stuff", Donna Summer
44) "Play That Funky Music", Wild Cherry
48) "Horse With No Name" (AKA "song with no sense"), America
Also, to be exact, #19 was by Andy Gibb, though I'm sure his trio of big brothers sang backup.
3 - Tonight's the Night - Rod Stewart
6 - My Sharona - The Knack
8 - Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan
23 - Kiss You All Over - Exile
26 - Close to You - The Carpenters
44 - Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
45 - Baby Come Back - Player
46 - Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes
50 - MacArthur Park - Donna Summer
a number were billboard #1 for the year and all the others were #1 for a few weeks

49.The Way We Were-Barbra Streisand
50.MacArthur Park-Donna Summer
"17) embarrassed by the crowd (This song is related to another song - or two - in this list. How?)"
Was it written by Burt Bacharach? I see at least two others that were, I think...
Posted by: Clayton at February 2, 2009 12:52 PMThe answer to B20 was "Something better beginning" by the Kinks.
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at February 2, 2009 1:02 PM9) Joy to the World, Three Dog Night (I thought it was "a single word.")
25) American Pie, Don McLean (I thought it was "We both.")
29) My Sweet Lord, George Harrison
33) Um, Blue Skies?
39) I Will Survive, Gloria Gaynor
42) Knock Three Times on the Ceiling if You Love Me
Posted by: trn at February 2, 2009 1:05 PMOh I see. Good job on the theme, Gail and Elie and Benjie.
So 33 isn't the original Blue Skies song, and 50 is in fact MacArthur Park but a newer version.
Posted by: trn at February 2, 2009 1:20 PM32 - Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John & Kiki Dee
Posted by: Clayton at February 2, 2009 1:22 PM41 - I Think I Love You - The Partridge Family
Posted by: Clayton at February 2, 2009 1:42 PM(I thought it was "We both.")
Never mind. It is of course You/your, not We/our, though the next line is in the singular first person.
"There's something special on my mind" was correctly identified as I'm Into Something Good by Herman's Hermits, and "Skies are blue" is Somewhere Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz.
I don't think most people saw the last batch of bonuses I posted there, though, so I hesistate to provide the solutions to those just yet. But perhaps not doing so is inappropriate, taking attention away from the current edition?
if #1 is you light up your life, it could also be a ranking of horrid songs
Posted by: benjie at February 2, 2009 2:41 PM28 - How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - The Bee Gees
Posted by: Clayton at February 2, 2009 2:46 PM30 my love - paul mccartney
haven't identified the following:
shadow dancing
night fever
tonight's the night
le freak
4 - Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb
5 - Le Freak - Chic
Thanks to Benjie for the hints. :)

49) "The Way We Were" - Barbara Streisand
50) "MacArthur Park" - Donna Summer
There was a typo in my response above - "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer is #37, not #27. So #27, "Me minus you is such a lonely ride" is still open.
Posted by: Elie at February 3, 2009 8:50 AM#33 is that "Blue Skies" song that's used on the Claritin commercials! But I have no recollection of who sang it originally.
Posted by: Elie at February 3, 2009 11:18 AMa. the rose didn't make it to #1
b. it came out in 1980
so i think 38 is misidentified

64 - Fly Robin Fly - Silver Convention
65 - Island Girl - Elton John
67 - 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon
69 - The Story In Your Eyes - The Moody Blues
"The Story In Your Eyes", while a wonderful song, doesn't seem like the type to have hit #1. I checked, and indeed it didn't.
Otherwise, nothing to add on the new ones yet - Clayton and Laura got all the ones I know so far.
Posted by: Elie at February 4, 2009 2:04 PMOops, you're right - in The Story In Your Eyes, it's "when the final line is over", not "act".
Posted by: Clayton at February 4, 2009 2:19 PM52 mac david - don't get hooked on me
Posted by: benjie at February 4, 2009 2:36 PMYitchak is right - I was mistaken. I believe #38 is Evergreen by Barbra Steisand.
57. Me & Mrs. Jones - Was it sung by Barry White? Not sure.

I think the singer's name is Billy Paul.
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at February 5, 2009 3:12 AMThanks Clayton for your interest in the last batch of bonuses I posted last time.
"Somehow, some day"
Correctly identified as Somewhere from West Side Story. Another one here is from West Side Story as well.
"But why do I always feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone" (or "That's the money you could be saving with Geico")
I didn't know this song, but coincidentally started hearing the chorus, which fit the theme of the then-current Musical Monday, on a television commercial. The lyrics played during the commercial are "I always feel like/Somebody's watching me" and the title is apparently Somebody's Watching Me. It is attributed to Rockwell but the version in the commercial is apparently a re-mix or cover.
I'm now looking out for the Claritin commercial Elie mentions.
"'Cause everywhere my baby and me go"
This is Somebody's Eyes Are Watching -- or maybe the correct title is simply Somebody's Eyes? -- from Footloose, apparently by Karla Bonoff.
Thinking of the Footloose Soundtrack reminds me of my Walkman.
"I'd like to add his initial to my monogram"
This is the Gershwin song Someone to Watch Over Me.
"Somewhere in my youth or childhood"
This is I Must Have Done Something Good from The Sound of Music.
"Could it be? Yes, it could."
There seems to be such an abundance of these songs in musicals, and Something's Coming is another one from West Side Story.
"When you find your true love"
Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific.
This is the only one I posted with plain old "some" and not a compound word using "some" in the title.
"The world was my oyster, but where was the pearl?"
Something Was Missing from Annie.
