I noticed some strange activity on my blog yesterday. A number of searches were for "David Ignatius Jewish" or "David Ignatius Israeli." About half of these searches came from Turkey. Finally after a few searches of my own, I figured it out. Washington Post columnist, David Ignatius moderated a forum at Davos between Israel's President Shimon Peres and Turkey's PM Tayip Erdogan. While I haven't seen the video, Erdogan complained that Ignatius cut him off. (Naturally this is the aspect that Iran's Press TV emphasizes.) My guess is that now the rumor is circulating that Ignatius is Jewish and he conspired with Shimon Peres to silence his critic.
But Erdogan as he proclaimed, "You are killing people," opened a can of worms that he'd probably rather keep quiet. You see, Turkey has been carrying on its own war against a terror group - the PKK - and casualties have been much higher than those between Israel and Hamas.
More than two decades of conflict has claimed at least 37,000 lives.

This isn't Erdogan's first outburst against Israel.
Apparently he's forgotten the Israeli aid to Turkey to help with relief efforts in the wake of devastating earthquake 10 years ago.

my name is zafer and i am from istanbul/turkey i had a chance to read your blog because of the headline and its very interesting and shows how people have only one perpective just like tayyip erdogan . i dont like tayyip erdogan he is a cheap lier politician but diffrence between peres and him is peres older than him thats all but u have to understand everthing about him doesnt make him wrong . he is right cause israel kill children and women for no reason . you just wrote up there that turkey has a war against pkk yes its true its a war between a counrty and terorist group over decade about part of south anatolia or u can say krdistan which is same to me they are killing our soldiers sometimes our citizens which is krd also and turkey killing armed terorists . israel has to find out the way to war against hamas terorists not the kids and women or ordinary citizens. speaking about the helps turkish people dont forget that never or ever i am not sure u are from israel or u are jewish doesnt chance anything . i believe our nation has showned our hospitality and helpfull thoughts to jewish people many many times . i am proud and happy about it cause thats why i have jewish friends and neihbours right now in istanbul so its all politics dont try to put the nations in this game and please think about all that innocent people in gazza who needs aid , medical support , shelter , even piece of food
PKK are terrorists; so is Hamas. Turkey kills PKK members; so does Israel. All terrorists are cowards. They hide behind women and children. This TUrkish PM is showing off to the Gazans. Why? What has Gaza ever done for anybody? Hamas receives Billions in aid, but does Hamas ever BUILD anything for its people? The UN provides the schools and hospitals in Gaza. This means that Hamas doesn't even need to spend money on that. Hamas spends All its money on weapons. Why doesn't Hamas BUILD something for its people?
Posted by: Flabba at January 30, 2009 12:07 PMzafer, as Soccerdad pointed out, Turkey's conflict with the PKK has resulted in the loss of 37,000 lives without regard as to whether they were terrorists or civilians. Israel's operation in Gaza resulted in hundreds of mostly terrorist deaths. And the few civilians who were killed was the result of hamas' use of them as human shields. Erdogan is hypocritical to the extreme. Did the Turk government warn Kurdish civilians before they struck against the PKK so that they can get out of harms way, as Israel did in Gaza? I would guess not. So you justify the deaths of 37,000 because well, the PKK has been terrorizing YOUR country. You are an extreme hypocrite as well. BTW, my guess would be that many if not most of those 37,000 were civilians because I'm certain that the Turkish military isn't careful as the IDF is in what it targets. I would presume the Turkish military doesn't have the same moral compass as the IDF. The irony is that the Israeli military is along with the US, the most moral in the world, yet the most vilified.
Well Turkey is not so hospitable for Jews these days.
Posted by: Laura at January 30, 2009 12:07 PMYou ask why Erdogan is defending hamas Flabba. Because Erdogan is a muslim and hamas are muslims. Its that simple.
Posted by: Laura at January 30, 2009 12:10 PMfirst off all u didnt understand my point this is not between the two nations jewish people always wellcome in turkey actually there is a jewish population lives here with their believes freely for long time we are always mad about people outside trying represent turkey by some small very fanatic and fundemental groups which almost every nations has this type people.
laura i am muslim too so do i have to defend hamas too ? its not that simple that kind od ideas makes all muslims terorist and create anger and hate in the muslim nations actually its helping terorist to recruit supporters.
and most important thing you can compare pkk/hamas to Turkey/israel problem there are lots of diffrences turkey is not one nation country diffrent nations including kurds have been living together even fight together for almost century ne dont have any wall or seperater between us they are free to live or to work anywhere in turkey there are kurdish parlementers in turkeys parlement even they support pkk and that 37000 lives we lost yes i say we lost almost %90 percent of them they were turkeys citizens almost half of them soldier and its a total lost of almost 30 years not 1500 for ten days stuck between the walls no where to go and how about israel how many years israel as a counrty i mean were there not even 70 years how many arabs used to live there how many they are now ? and laura can you say gazza YOUR country ? i truelly believe jewish nations deserves that lands as a country same for the palestine people they deserve a land for free counrty there is only one solution here both sides have to accept a fair sharing cause living together is not a option but what i see israel trying to get everthing and trying to ignore palestine populatioan and Flabba i dont care what UN did to them or how many billions hamas has i was talking about conditions right now do they need aid or help what ever you called ? YES are they getting it ? NO why ? cause all the acsess bloked .
As a Bible-believing Christian, I've been waiting (not with anticipation, people, just w/curiosity) to see how the stage-setting for the Turkey prophecy of Ezekiel 38 would unfold, as Turkey was the one country of the named enemy alliance that still has yet to move to be allied against Israel. I've been watching all the WEF videos coming out of Davos (YouTube channel WorldEconomicForum), & I gotta say, Shimon Peres (whose positions I don't normally like at all) rocked!

Defending hamas is exactly what you are doing. How is it that turkey has the right to fight the PKK but according to you, Israel shouldn't fight hamas? You are a hypocrite. Your views are typical of the islamic mindset. I have yet to hear any muslim believe Israel even has the right to exist, let alone defend itself.

" its not that simple that kind od ideas makes all muslims terorist and create anger and hate in the muslim nations actually its helping terorist to recruit supporters.

Cut the BS about how we make muslims into terrorists. No, the ideas which make muslims into terrorists would be those that are written in the koran, the indoctrination to hatred and violence against infidels spoken in mosques, schools and the media. Hold your own people accountable for their actions and stop infantalizing them. If people can be turned into terrorists because of what's said about them, Jews and Christians should have been turned into terrorists by now, what with all the hatred being directed at us from muslims. Admit that islam is inherently evil.
"years israel as a counrty i mean were there not even 70 years how many arabs used to live there how many they are now"
......................................
Actually there are many MORE Arabs in Israel now, including in Judea and Samaria and Gaza. Let me ask you, how many Jews are there left in muslim countries? A trickle. So which side is guilty of ethnic cleansing? DO THE MATH. NUMBERS DON'T LIE. You may be able to pull this crap with most other uninformed, particularly liberal, westerners. But you don't fool anyone here.
Oh and BTW, the Kurds have the right to their own state. Much more so than the so-called "palestinians" who are not a distinct ethnic group, but simply Arabs, which already have 22 states. Those Arabs, which the world labels as "palestinians" should be absorbed into the already existing Arab nations. Problem solved. On the other hand, the Kurds have not one state of their own. So as far as I can see, they have the right to resist Turkish occupation.
Posted by: Laura at January 31, 2009 2:04 PM:) ok cool after i saw your own blog page i wasnt waiting anything better than this dont be so fanatic. no worthed write here cause we are not even close i am glad i am not like u try to be more humanist just a last thing what kind of etcnic cleaning u talking about are you out of your mind most of jewishes moved to israel from here late 1940 and 1950 's cause they wanted to live in ISRAEL as a kind of promise country or land stop dreaming we are not crusaders or nazis and i think this is good enough answer to cindy
i think we have to trust and pray to the only common denominator of our believes which is god to finish and clean this mess . peace to everyone
Half of the Jews in Israel are native to the Middle East, they came from Arab countries. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were kicked out of muslim countries at the time of Israel's establishment and in the years following.
