Musical monday #71

I always enjoy Musical Mondays. It's nice getting comments on my blog, and rarely do I get more than I get for Musical Monday. What's also nice is that I get to switch off with and sometimes work with my friend Elie (Happy Pearl Harbor day yesterday, BTW). Of course when I work with him I find out that ideas that are uncertain have a way of becoming fully realized when he points me to the necessary resources or shares his knowledge of pop music. That is a lot of fun.

Anyway, here's the latest Musical Monday. This week it's a collaborative effort and I thank Elie for helping me dig out these lyrics. For an extra challenge, If the answer isn't in the title, give the relevant lyrics. In 17 and 19, there are lyrics in addition to the titles that are appropriate answers. For an additional challenge, let me know which pairs of songs provide the greatest contrasts. (I was thinking 11 is a pretty strong contrast to 10 or to 7; or that 5 and 13 are pretty diametrically opposed.)

Please check out Musical Monday 70 for last week's answers!

Anyway, you know the drill, here are the lyrics, identify the songs and the underlying theme.

1) "Gonna keep on dancing to the rock and roll"
2) "But everybody's kickin' sand"
3)"Like to tell you 'bout my baby"
4) "And somebody else's favorite song"
5) "Out by the gas fires of the refinery"
6) "Put away the books, we're out of school"
7) "T-t-t-teachers gonna show you"
8) "Huarachi sandals too"
9)"Our little boy is four years old and quite a little man"
10) "You made me feel alive, but something died I fear"
11) "Lock up your back door and run for your life"
12) "I pushed her away, I walked to the door"
13) "And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me"
14) "Put your pride on the shelf"
15) "(sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me)"
16) "Did I miss the long freeway?"
17) "Honey disconnect the phone"
18) "Be back before it melts in the pan"
19) "We were two kids and I was was into AM rock"
20) "Which one of us is right if we always fight"
21) "With their pipedreams in their heads and very little money in their hands"
22) "Treasure these few words 'till we're together"
23) "Quick sack, 12 pack, back again"
24) "Mama had a time tryin' to raise nine kids"
25) "'Hiya, Mr. Jackson'"
26) "Mrs. Johnson wore her miniskirt into the room"
27) "Style is timeless and fashion's only now"
28) "You're my flavour of the week"
29) "I'll tell anyone whose heart can comprehend"
30) "Leave the real one far behind"
31) "The Cokes are in the icebox"

Enjoy!

Congratulations to ral for guessing that the theme was "siblings." The first group were of groups who were real or fictional siblings. The second group were pairs of siblings who recorded separately. Yitz got the "Glimmer Twins" which was the way that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards referred to themselves as producers. The other Extra Credit was a song from the Dan Fogelberg and Tim Weisberg album, "Twin sons of different mothers." The "Is this legal question" were songs by brothers in law Jakob Dylan (of the Wallflowers) and Peter Himmelman. (I'm kind of surprised that no one got .38 Special.)

Finally I get to take a crack at this before all of the answers are given. Hah!

13: God Bless The USA- Lee Greenwood
15: Respect- Aretha Franklin
19: WOLD- Harry Chapin

Have to come back and take a crack later at the others.

Posted by: Jack at December 8, 2008 1:14 AM

5- Born in the USA (Bruce Springsteen)
8-Surfin' USA (The Beach Boys)
17- Back in the USSR (The Beatles)
22- P.S. I Love You (The Beatles)
The theme is something to do with patriotism, love for the USA, etc. (Maybe it's tied to Pearl Harbor Day, WWII, or the Cold War? Maybe I'm overthinking this?)

Posted by: Raizy at December 8, 2008 3:45 AM

4 - FM - Steely Dan
10 - SOS - ABBA
21 - R-O-C-K in the USA - John Mellencamp

I think the theme is songs with capitalized abbreviations in the title, or used within the song. (In #15, Aretha spells out "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" and uses the abbreviation "T-C-B".)

Posted by: Clayton at December 8, 2008 9:36 AM

7) ABC, Jackson Five
13) Proud to be an American?
15) Respect, Aretha Franklin
17) Back in the USSR, The Beatles

Posted by: trn at December 8, 2008 9:40 AM

I know 15 is almost certainly "Respect", but my first thought was "Troglodyte (Cave Man)".

11) T.N.T., AC/DC
14) YMCA, Village People
21) ROCK in the USA, John Mellencamp

Posted by: ral315 at December 8, 2008 9:41 AM

Also, the additional appropriate lyrics for #17 are "Flew into Miami Beach, BOAC". BOAC was an airline which later became British Airways.

Posted by: Clayton at December 8, 2008 9:44 AM

2.Living in the USA-Steve Miller
5.Born in the USA-Bruce Springsteen
7.Hot for Teacher-Van Halen
13.God Bless the USA-Lee Greenwood
15.Respect-Aretha Franklin
17.Back in the USSR-The Beatles
22.PS I Love You-The Beatles

Posted by: Laura at December 8, 2008 12:20 PM

In Respect, Aretha spells out RESPECT
most of the other songs have have initiald

Posted by: benjie at December 8, 2008 2:08 PM

Nice job on finding the theme, Clayton.

I'm suddenly thinking of G-L-O-R-I-A. In both Gloria songs, the name is spelled out, so perhaps those are candidates.

Hmm, for that matter, the same goes for Lola.

Lola has *got* to be there.

Ah, there it is!

12) Lola, The Kinks, "L-O-L-A Lola" (and "C-O-L-A cola")

How did I miss that the first time? That song is a favorite of mine.

Eloh Elay Lola -- I've always enjoyed the way that sounds.

Posted by: trn at December 8, 2008 2:09 PM

Nice job Benjie too.

To clarify, it isn't only terms abbreviated as initials; some words are spelled out. Perhaps, especially if #7 is ABC, the theme could be spelling?

Posted by: trn at December 8, 2008 2:35 PM

Thanks, trn. You're right; I got a bit too specific in my description, since several of them are obviously not abbreviations. I also need to correct myself on another point: the Beatles lyric is "flew in from", not "into".

Posted by: Clayton at December 8, 2008 4:15 PM

12.LOLA-The Kinks

Posted by: Laura at December 8, 2008 5:42 PM

trn, Gloria would be number 3. I think of the line as starting with the word "Wanna." Credit the song to Them although there are umpteen versions.

Bonus clue:

Come out the house, early in the mornin'

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at December 8, 2008 9:05 PM

1 - Saturday Night - The Bay City Rollers

Posted by: Clayton at December 9, 2008 2:35 AM

24) T-R-O-U-B-L-E, Travis Tritt/Elvis Presley
30) Safety Dance, Men Without Hats

Posted by: ral315 at December 9, 2008 9:00 AM

How about a mid-week recap.

1) Saturday Night - The Bay City Rollers
2) Living in the USA - Steve Miller Band
3) "Like to tell you 'bout my baby"
4) FM - Steely Dan
5) Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen

8) Surfin' USA - The Beach Boys
9) "Our little boy is four years old and quite a little man"
10) SOS - ABBA
11) TNT - AC/DC

14) YMCA - The Village People
15) Respect - Aretha Franklin
16) "Did I miss the long freeway?"

21) R-O-C-K in the USA - John Mellencamp
22) P.S. I Love You - The Beatles
23) "Quick sack, 12 pack, back again"
24) T-R-O-U-B-L-E - Elvis, Travis Tritt
25) "'Hiya, Mr. Jackson'"
26) "Mrs. Johnson wore her miniskirt into the room"
27) "Style is timeless and fashion's only now"
28) "You're my flavour of the week"
29) "I'll tell anyone whose heart can comprehend"
30) The Safety Dance - Men Without Hats
31) "The Cokes are in the icebox"

I've been trying to think of other songs that fit. I remember there was a country song called "D-I-V-O-R-C-E", but all I know is the title so I don't know if it's here. Does anyone recognize it?

Posted by: Clayton at December 10, 2008 11:48 AM

I also remember the DIVORCE song

there is also a connie francis song VACATION in the summertime

in watching scotty grow, does he also spell out a word?

Posted by: benjie at December 10, 2008 2:39 PM

9 watching scotty grow - bobby goldsboro/mac davis

Posted by: benjie at December 10, 2008 3:06 PM

I have nothing new to add, but I feel the need to say:

R-O-L-A-I-D-S

Posted by: trn at December 10, 2008 8:12 PM

And let me just mention that Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A.

:-D

Posted by: Clayton at December 11, 2008 1:21 AM

TRN,

I didn't mean for to be so tough. There are several country songs, though.

Clayton,

Benjie's guess was a good one. I had to look up the lyrics for that song and he's got a great memory. But Watching Scotty Grow is not included.

Posted by: soccer dad at December 11, 2008 8:25 AM

I will guess, then, that #9 is "D-I-V-O-R-C-E". Based on my hazy memory of a +/- 25-year-old TV commercial, the singer is female, so I'll also guess that it's either Tammy Wynette or Dolly Parton. Corrections or confirmation, please, from anyone who unlike me, actually knows what they are talking about... :-)

Posted by: Clayton at December 11, 2008 12:49 PM

I apologize. My intention was not to comment on the difficulty or anything of the sort. Rather, in thinking of all the spelling, my thoughts simply kept going to the question from the old commercial, "How do you spell relief?" I thought it would be cute to write what I did.

Posted by: trn at December 11, 2008 6:01 PM

Clayton:

I'm pretty sure D-I-V-O-R-C-E was Tammy Wynette. I think you're right about that lyric as well.

Also, #3 is G-L-O-R-I-A, which was pointed out above but not included in the recap.

Posted by: ral315 at December 12, 2008 1:59 PM

Whoops - I forgot to add that to the list, sorry. Here's a fresh update.

1) Saturday Night - The Bay City Rollers
2) Living in the USA - Steve Miller Band
3) Gloria - Them

10) SOS - ABBA
11) TNT - AC/DC
12) Lola - The Kinks
13) God Bless the USA - Lee Greenwood
14) YMCA - The Village People
15) Respect - Aretha Franklin
16) "Did I miss the long freeway?"
17) Back in the USSR - The Beatles
