Musical monday #65

Elie's been bugging me to put together a list of past themes and I haven't done it yet. I hope that he didn't do this one yet. I don't think so. You know the drill. No googling. Figure out the lyrics and the theme. Check out Elie's Musical Monday #64 for the complete solution!

1 I wanna wake up in a city that doesn't sleep
2 I'm taking a greyhound on the Hudson river line
3 To the left and to the right, buildings towering to the sky
4 ... have they given up and all gone home to bed
5 I learned a lot of lessons awful quick
6 Fly down to mexico
7 When you're sleeping on the 4th floor up
8 Voices leaking from a sad cafe
9 You'd rather see me paralyzed
10 They say there's always magic in the air
11 The Movie-Palace is now undone,
12 It only comes out when the moon is on the run
13 Hello lampost
14 Straight, straight through the heart of you
15 Up and down Park Avenue
16 And I nearly died from hospitality
17 Ya know the movement seems to soothe me
18 Asking only workman's wages
19 Can you tell me now, Before I'm leaving you
20 Not even the chair
21 This guy's the one that makes you feel so safe, so sane and so secure
22 Silence please, listen to the words I say
23 She made me stop and get ahold of myself
24 ... when you're short on your dough.
25 And he keeps his pockets full of spending loot
26 Baby when we touch, Love you so much

The guys who did #19 are better known for producing #5.

Good luck and happy guessing!

Welcome back!

1 - New York, New York - Frank Sinatra, and many others
2 - New York State of Mind - Billy Joel
10 - On Broadway - George Benson
13 - 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) - Simon and Garfunkel
15 - Puttin' On the Ritz - the 80s version by Taco is the one I'm most familiar with. Also by Peter Boyle as Frankenstein's monster in "Young Frankenstein".
16 - Couldn't Get it Right - Climax Blues Band
18 - The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel
20 - I Am, I Said - Neil Diamond
24 - YMCA - The Village People
25 - Boy From New York City - Manhattan Transfer

The theme must be songs about New York.

Posted by: Clayton at October 27, 2008 9:41 AM

No, we didn't do this theme yet, though of course a few New York songs appeared in my "States" theme.

Clayton beat me to most of the ones I know off the bat. I'll think about a couple others that are familiar.

Posted by: Elie at October 27, 2008 10:15 AM

5) "New York's Not My Home", Jewish Jim Croce

Posted by: Elie at October 27, 2008 10:56 AM

9. Positively 4th Street--Dylan

A list of past themes would be great, Soccer Dad and Elie! I have had some ideas but have wondered whether they have already been done.

For this edition, the ones I recognized immediately -- 1, 2, and 13 -- have been identified.

I keep thinking now of the Ghostbusters song.

Does anyone else remember a Jewish parody of New York, New York called Boro Park?

Hahaha, Jewish Jim Croce.

My bonus lyric in #63, "Guess I'll set a course and go," was indeed Wooden Ships, as Elie identified, though I credit it to CSN, not CSNY.

Yitzchak and Clayton, what were your bonus songs?

Posted by: trn at October 27, 2008 4:45 PM

Can I post a bonus song for today's theme? Don't think it is there:

27) "You're no tramp, but you're no lady"

Posted by: Elie at October 27, 2008 5:05 PM

Yitzchak and Clayton, what were your bonus songs?

Mine was "Supersonic Rocket Ship" by the Kinks (from about 1972).

A new bonus question could be to name all the Steely Dan songs with New York references.

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at October 27, 2008 5:58 PM

trn: My bonus lyric for #63 ("Pulled out of San Pedro late one night") was Hot Rod Lincoln by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen.

I should point out that 21 - 26 are slightly different from 1 - 20 and that I probably should have switched 25 and 21.

And please try Elie's #27. When I first thought of this, I really had intended to include it. But when I got around to putting it together, somehow I forgot it.

26 Baby when we touch, Love you so much
27) "You're no tramp, but you're no lady"

Posted by: Clayton at October 28, 2008 6:47 PM

21.The group is the Brooklyn Bridge but I can't recall the name of the song.

Posted by: Laura at October 30, 2008 3:20 AM

Thanks for the answers to your bonuses, Yitzchak and Clayton.

Thanks for the updated list, Clayton.

So for 21 through 26, it is the group name rather than the title that expresses the theme, except for 25, which has the theme expressed in both title and artist, which is why Soccer Dad says 25 would have been better placed at 21, where it would have straddled both sub-groups.

We don't know to which group Elie's bonus, 27, belongs.

Are either Give My Regards to Broadway or Lullaby of Broadway in there? How about Bleeker Street?
