Tzipi Livni--Prime MinisterHaving a woman as Vice President in the US would pale in comparison. [pun intended]Dorit Beinish--President of the Supreme Court.Dalia Itzik--Speaker of the Knesset.
Uhh, based solely on these three examples, there's a pretty good argument here for excluding women from high office!
Luckily Sarah Palin seems to be of an entirly different quality...
We can only hope.
Of course, Golda Meir was another story.
I wonder where a comparison of Golda of Milwaukee and Sara of Anchorage would lead...

Nowhere, she hasn't done anything to be compared to Golda Mier. If you insist on putting Palin on a pedestal you are bound to be disappointed. I recall how conservatives fawned over Bush during his first term and now many have been disappointed.
Pardon me for going a bit off topic, but I just heard that the organizers of the anti-Iran rally in front of the UN have asked Palin not to attend.
As to the topic, I disagree with Laura. Palin will be shown to have flaws, no doubt. However, she has a way of dealing with people, which I suspect will help her succeed on the national political scene.
They didn't like Margaret Thatcher either. They considered her an upstart. She surprised them.
I wish we had a national or provincial politician like her in Canada.
Posted by: Hugh at September 18, 2008 10:13 PMHmmm...I seem to recall that Golda Meir had a leetle problem in 1973 that almost caused the destruction of Israel and ended up resigning, which I give her credit for as a pricipled position.
The Labor Zionists acomplished much but bear a great deal of responsibility for the problems Israel faces today, IMO ..going back to the Altalena
Now, Lady Thatcher..THERE was a leader. If a younger version of Lady Thatcher was running running here in the US, the only thing we'd be arguing about is how big a landslide she'd be winning by.
And can you just imagine what she'd have done for Eretz Yisrael in the PM's chair?
Give Sarah Palin four years in the number 2 spot and watch her take on the same mojo..

Laura, I was not comparing in terms of accomplishments, but rather in terms of background and overall impression they made on those around them.
Posted by: Daled Amos at September 19, 2008 12:43 AMInterestingly when Margaret Thatcher won her first term as Prime Minister--by a landslide--it was not Thatcher that the people wanted as Prime Minister.
In the run up to the 1979 General Election, most opinion polls showed that voters preferred James Callaghan as Prime Minister even as the Conservative Party maintained a lead in the polls. The Conservatives would go on to win a 44-seat majority in the House of Commons and Margaret Thatcher became the United Kingdom's first female Prime Minister.
Would a younger Margaret Thatcher here win by a landslide?
Not unless your hypothetical Thatcher was a Democrat.
