Speaking of which, don't you think you ought to check out the answers of Musical Monday #58?

And this one, at least half fits the theme:
30)When they meet for one big show
UPDATE: Elie and my brother pointed out two really egregious omissions. And my brother points out (Clayton did too) that Dream a little dream is credited to the Mamas and Papas and since (as Clayton pointed out) Michelle Philips is still alive, it didn't really count. So here are two more:
31) I play the game, a fantasy
32) She said --You know I love you because you're so much like him.
One more hint: Two of the songs have the names of states in them.

A few more for now:
2) [I think this is] "Gold", Neil Young and Stevie Nicks
11) "Another Saturday Night", original is Sam Cooke
14) "Rock Around The Clock", Bill Haley and His Comets
29) "Mack the Knife", but I'm not sure who did the original... Sinatra? Cab Calloway?
Can't see any common theme yet.
Posted by: Elie at September 15, 2008 9:10 AM1 - Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
3 - Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer
10 - Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
22 - Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner - Warren Zevon
28 - Suspicious Minds - Elvis
1. Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
25. Stand By Your Man - Tammy Wynette
27. Crying - I can picture his face, but can't come up with the name
28. Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley
29. Mack the Knife was sung by Bobby Darin
I know I know more, but can't quite come up with them...
If #27 is "Crying" than I believe the singer is Roy Orbison.
Conversely, sorry for my error on the singer of #2 - it's *not* Neil Young!
Posted by: Elie at September 15, 2008 9:33 AMAnd with the above additional answers, I can guess the theme - as well as the emphasis on specific versions of songs. Is it artists who have passed on?
Posted by: Elie at September 15, 2008 9:38 AM26. Hit The Road Jack- Ray Charles
Posted by: Jack at September 15, 2008 11:58 AM16 was apparently given away in the original post. (Walk away from Love, David Ruffin).
12) Piece of my Heart - Big Brother and the Holding company
15) Chantilly Lace - Big Bopper
17) Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb
Also, 24 is by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.
So here's what we've got so far:
1) Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
2) Gold - ?
3) Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer
4)
5)
6)
7)
8) La Bamba - ?

10) Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
11) Another Saturday Night - Sam Cooke
12) Piece of my Heart - Big Brother and the Holding company
13)
14) Rock around the Clock - Bill Haley and His Commets
15) Chantilly Lace - Big Bopper
16) Walk away from Love - David Ruffin
17) Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb

26) Hit the Road, Jack - Ray Charles
27) Crying - Roy Orbison
28) Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley
29) Mack the Knife - ?
30)
#8-La Bamba is by Ritchie Valens, one of the three who perished "the day the music died" along with Buddy Holly and JP Richardson aka "The Big Bopper". So I'd expect to find a Buddy Holly song somewhere here.
Also, the singer for #29 "Mack the Knife" was correctly ID'ed above by Gail as Bobby Darin.
Posted by: Elie at September 15, 2008 12:11 PM23.Imagine-John Lennon
24.Why Do Fools Fall in Love-Little Anthony and the Imperials.
26.Hit the Road Jack-Ray Charles
28.Suspicious Minds-Elvis Presley
29.Mac the Knife-Bobby Darren
2 last name stewart - wrote daydream believer is also dead
13 naomi cohen aka mama cass - can't
21 most beautiful girl - charlie rich
30 rock and roll heaven -didn't one of the 2 die?
"Gold" is by John Stewart, then.
Posted by: Clayton at September 15, 2008 2:17 PMAlso - Didn't Buddy Holly do a version of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love"?
Posted by: Clayton at September 15, 2008 2:23 PM13 - Dream a Little Dream of Me - was this The Mamas and The Papas, or Mama Cass solo?
Posted by: Clayton at September 15, 2008 2:35 PMAha, I missed "the popular song version" on #29. Darin it is.
I'm pretty sure Frankie Lymon was the originator of Why Do Fools Fall in Love.
Posted by: ral315 at September 15, 2008 2:42 PMYeah, I just looked it up and you're right. So, as Elie pointed out, there's probably still an unidentified Buddy Holly song out there...
Posted by: Clayton at September 15, 2008 3:16 PMI assume that for #12, you wanted Janis Joplin - working with Eli's theme. I still can't believe someone got this song before me!
Posted by: SS at September 15, 2008 4:33 PMElie was right about the theme and who else to look out for.
In addition to those two, you'll notice that I correctly guessed David Ruffin. :-) So who else would that suggest?
Raizy, Laura and ral315 all guessed John Lennon, so who else does that suggest?
Finally, Elie noted in an e-mail that there's an artist who, if you know me, would have to be included. Who's that?
Posted by: soccer dad at September 15, 2008 4:46 PMI don't know the songs you're looking for, but I had suspected a George Harrison song and, perhaps, a Jim Croce song.
Posted by: ral315 at September 15, 2008 5:43 PM12.Piece of My Heart-Janis Joplin
The theme is deceased artists.
Posted by: Laura at September 16, 2008 1:31 AMThere was also a Louis Armstrong Mack the Knife and many other versions since. Maybe Armstrong's version came before Darren's. Does Armstrong sing "O the shark has pretty teeth, dear" or the way it's quoted above with the word "babe"? Perhaps the first recording with the Blitzstein translation of Bertolt Brecht's words was the original cast album of the Off-Broadway Threepenny Opera. This isn't the first time Brecht-Weill have appeared in MM.
Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at September 16, 2008 2:37 AM4. How Sweet it is to Be Loved By You - James Taylor did one version, but I am not sure who did the original. Marvin Gaye, maybe?
Posted by: Gail at September 17, 2008 7:54 AMIt seems that I am wrong on #4. I am told it is a song with some similar words. I have no clue. Well, that's not exactly true - I have a clue but I have no idea!
Posted by: Gail at September 17, 2008 10:34 AM"Finally, Elie noted in an e-mail that there's an artist who, if you know me, would have to be included. Who's that?"
Would it by any chance be Harry Chapin? He'd qualify for this theme, though if he's represented here I'm not recognizing it.
