The Watcher's Council's nominations are up.
Get Your Grim Milestone Today? -
Done With Mirrors
wonders how death #4000 of a soldier differs materially from death #3996, or are numbers just a simple way of implying that the war was wrong. He says it nicely,
It treats round numbers as the definition of reality, and an excuse to stoke pessimism -- this is not merely a headline for the present state of things in Iraq ...
A Taxonomy of Mea Culpas -
The Glittering Eye
looks at how various commentators looks back at 5 years in Iraq. The taxonomy is interesting, especially the "I was misled" excuse as it applies to a presidential candidate. If you're admitting that you were easily led down a primrose path, is that really a qualification for leadership? As a bonus this is how he characterizes those who hold this view:
... because of their extreme dislike of George Bush whom they remarkably seem to consider simultaneously an idiot and a criminal mastermind.
Genocide By Inches -
Joshuapundit
ties the recent Merkaz Hatorah massacre in with the recently observed holiday of Purim. He laments how much of the world has become inured to terror against Israel. The difference he identifies is that while the villain of Purim, Haman planned to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire (and likely the world) on one day, the Palestinians are committing "Genocide by inches" as much as their capabilities will allow them. It's very well state, and shortly after reading it, I saw an IBD editorial that said the
same thing:
Their version of the Final Solution may not entail gas chambers and concentration camps, as Germany's National Socialists did in the last century. But it does apparently include murdering, at random, Jews because they are Jews.
(h/t
Elder of Ziyon)
Israel must defeat the Palestinians, not give them more and resources.
What Would You Do? -
Bookworm Room
asks if 40 years of working towards equality have left Blacks just as badly off as they had been before legislation and programs had been directed to alleviate the effects if discrimination, what would you do? She takes Rev. Wright and those like him at their word.
Beer-Soaked Politics -
Cheat Seeking Missiles
discusses the ties between beer and North Korea.
A Conversation With Sa'ad -
Wolf Howling
has had a houseguest, an Iraqi translator whose perspective on what's gone on over the past five years in his country is quite enlightening.
Municipal Internet -- Deader Than a Doornail?-
Rhymes With Right
notices problems with Municipal internet schemes and asks if this was ever the government's business to get into.
Question "Authority" -
The Colossus of Rhodey
goes after his love: comic books. In particular he takes on a series called about a group called the "Authority for its rabid anti-Americanism. The story, it seems, is ruined by a desire to score political points, rather than demonstrate any level of consistency.
Virgina Taxpayers Made To Pay For Criminal's Rampage - Yesterday I heard a news report on the radio that the state of Virginia would be paying families of the victims of last year's Virginian Tech shooting $100,000 each. Then the reporter quotes a family member saying that this paltry amount shows how little value the state puts on life. What the reporter never asked is what
The Education Wonks
does: why is it the state's responsibility?
Welcome To a Brave New World -
Right Wing Nut House
looks at the new coalition in Pakistan and sees that it's ready to extend tolerance to the Taliban. This may save the government of Pakistan but it is likely to be costly in Afghanistan.
It's All in the Branding - In my own entry, I fault those who euphemize terror, making it more acceptable.
My non-council nominee for the week was Labor of Hate Part I by Simply Jews, an examination into the resurgent antisemitism of Russia. Who would have thought that in this regard, Putin turns out to be the reasonable one?
