Beauties in the desert and in tinseltown

The New York Times reports on how Saudi judge beauty,

“It’s just like judging a beautiful girl,” said Fowzan al-Madr, ... “You look for big eyes, long lashes ... maybe 39 or 40 ....”

OK, that's not as lascivious as it sounds, that's a camel breeder talking, here's the full quote.

“It’s just like judging a beautiful girl,” said Fowzan al-Madr, a camel breeder from the Kharj region southeast of Riyadh. “You look for big eyes, long lashes and a long neck — maybe 39 or 40 inches.”

Of course this is hardly news.

However, if they're allowed to appreciate camel beauty in the desert kingdom, they're not allowed to view human beauty in Iran, apparently.

The conservatives in power, fresh from their expected and planned victory on Friday, are not swerving from their intentions. Yesterday the minister of culture ordered the closure of nine society and lifestyle magazines, and put another 13 on notice.

The reasons that led to the issuing of the order are not entirely clear. The magazines, in fact, do not deal with dangerous political topics, but are dedicated to stories about lifestyle, family advice, and gossip on international celebrities. Their pages also contain photographs of Iranian actresses in loose headscarves and stylish dress, images that for the most part are tolerated even by the state media.

Seraphic Secret, though, is not bound by the mullahs and regularly treats us to the history of Hollywood including the Rabbi's daughter who became a movie star. I'd never heard of her before, but he loves the history of Hollywood and it shows when he tells the stories of lesser known stars.

However there's one actor who won't be able to star with any famous Hollywood actresses.
