This week's council submissions are in.
Greatest Generation - Done With Mirrors looks at the post WW II generation and those who served in government. Specifically he focuses on Gen. MacArthur and wonders if there's an officer in the army now with the same skills and ambitions to accomplish what MacArthur did.
The Illegal Immigration Debate: Why You Can't Mix Religion With Politics - The Colossus of Rhodey critiques an essay advocating help for illegal aliens written by a priest. He concludes that the religious arguments made by the priest don't work for making a policy. While I understand his argument in this case, I don't accept the rule without qualification. There are times when religion can and should inform political decisions.
The Politics of Immigration - While The Glittering Eye doesn't object to immigration generally he finds that our immigration policy regarding Mexico (or more specifically regarding immigrants who pass through Mexico) needs revision. The most important goal of an immigration policy is assmilation.
Of Islamist Foxes and British Chickens - New council member, Wolf Howling ins his inaugural submission laments the decision of the British government to put a couple of Islamists in charge of an organization whose purpose is to govern British Muslims. Daniel Pipes wrote a related essay Weak Brits, Tough French.
The Teddy Bear That Blasphemed - The Education Wonks covers the case of Gillian Gibbons and the teddy bear named Mohammed.
Joe Biden: I Don't Know **** About the Constitution - Rhymes With Right critiques Sen. Biden's declared intent to impeach President Bush if he order an attack on Iran and shows that the senator's statement doesn't quite match the requirements of the constitution.
Bored Now; Turn the Page - Through the prism of Rep. Murtha's acknowledgment that the surge is working, Big Lizards sees some important political implications. Chief among them is that if the war in Iraq is successful, the Democrats will no longer use it as a campaign issue. Politically, it's not smart to oppose a popular war.
FBI Rebuts CAIR Scare Tactics - If you ever check out the FBI's hate crime statistics you might be surprised by what you find. Cheat Seeking Missiles reports that Investor's Business Daily did just that and determined that CAIR inflates the degree to which anti-Muslim prejudice is a problem in the United States.
Two Different Worlds - Bookworm Room celebrates the conservative media for presenting the whole picture not exclusively the information that supports their position.
Bush Signals Iran: US Military Option Off The Table - Joshuapundit writes that the NIE isn't the result of some nefarious left-wing plot to derail the president, rather it comes from the president and it's an acknowledgment that the United States will not attack Iran during his term in office. Similar thoughts here.
If the Huck Wins, the Right Loses - Right Wing Nut House looks at Gov. Huckabee's fiscal record and finds it disconcerting.
Hard Cell - My submission deals with the recent discovery that some skin cells can be altered to mimic embryonic stem cells presented through the commentary of Charles Krauthammer who is not only a doctor but suffers from a spinal injury.
Read, Enjoy. Be Informed.
