There are a number of bloggers whom I miss. I miss AbbaGav a lot. He had a keen eye for both news and satire and could always make me laugh. Fortunately, a few months ago when I visited Israel, I got a chance to meet him. He was every bit as fun in person - during our brief talks - as he blogged.
Over Yom Tov, I got to meet another former blogger, A Whispering Soul. He was visiting a friend in Baltimore who introduced me to him. We talked a bit, which was very enjoyable. The reason I'm bringing this up is that Musical Menu Monday was his creation. He'd give lyrics to songs based on a theme AND provide a menu to go along. Though I enjoyed guessing the lyrics, the recipes he wrote out were much too complicated for me. (A recipe for me: potatoes - toss into the pot, onions - toss into the post, stir, hope for the best.) I really missed the Musical Menu Monday when he quit, so I asked if he minded if I revived the idea. So you know where this came from.
Anyway, the gaps are significant. Guess the lyrics and the theme.
1) And I said, "How are you Sue?"
2) "It's better sometimes when we don't get to touch our dreams."
3) He may not be a movie star
4) I've got all the riches baby one man can claim
5) Did you know I'd go to sleep and leave the lights on?
6) I dreamed she came back home last night
7) And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
8) Want an axe to break the ice
9) far beneath the ship the world is mourning
10) They knock me out when I'm down there
11) Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
12) Nobody knows where my Johnny has gone
13) Johnny jumped and he hit him
14) Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A.
15) You can pay uncle sam with overtime
16) Banjos playing through the broken glass
17) In Birmingham they love the governor.
18) You're asking me will my love grow,
19) You know it's just your foolish pride.
20) So I give her the car keys
Answers to Musical Monday #13
Elie's Expositions got the theme right. Songs with the same names by different artists. Or as he put it cleverly "song homonyms."
Thanks also for Fiery Spirited Zionist and JudeoPudit for playing.
So with no further ado:
Gloria
1) Shadows of the Night (and others)
2) U2
3) Laura Branigan
Sara
4) Fleetwood Mac
5) Starship
6) Bob Dylan
Wishing Well
7) Free
8) Terrence Trent D'Arby
(I wouldn't have known these but I had each on different anthology CD's)
Dance, Dance, Dance
9) Beach Boys
10) Steve Miller Band
I learned about the second version when I did Musical Monday 11!
Dream On
11) Aerosmith
12) Righteous Brothers - during their brief mid-1970's comeback
Walk Like a Man
13) Grand Funk Railroad
14) Four Seasons
Shout
15) Isley Brothers
16) Tears for Fears
17) The Best of my Love - Eagles
18) Best of my Love - The Emotions
(I know, not quite.)
19) Brandy - Looking Glass
20) Mandy - Barry Manilow
You see in the late 60's a songwriter named Scott English wrote a song "Brandy." In 1972 the Looking Glass had a hit with "Brandy." So when Barry Manilow recorded his first hit, he changed the name to "Mandy."
And while I'm at it, I included two "Dance" themed lyrics that I'd forgotten
21b) And we Danced - The Hooters
22b) Your Mama don't Dance - Loggins and Messina (and Poison!)

I won't state the theme to give others a chance though it may be somewhat obvious from my song guesses:
1) Harry Chapin, "Taxi"
2) Harry Chapin, sequel to Taxi, but I'm not sure of the title - is it "Reunion", something like that?
7) David Bowie, "Space Oddity"
9) Another group, "Major Tom"
10) Beach Boys, "California Girls"
11) Beatles, "Back In the USSR"
14) Billy Joel, "My Life"
15) Billy Joel, "Moving Out" (these should be in reverse order, no?)
16) "Southern Man", Neil Young
17) "Sweet Home Alabama", Lynryd Skynryd
4.My Girl-The Temptations
10.California Girls-The Beach Boys
11.Back in the USSR-The Beatles
14.My Life-Billy Joel
17.Sweet Home Alabama-Lynyrd Skynyrd
18.Something-The Beatles
20.Wonderful Tonight-Eric Clapton
Posted by: Laura at October 8, 2007 12:36 PM19.Layla-Eric Clapton
The last three songs have to do with Patty Boyd, who was married to George Harrison and then Eric Clapton.
Posted by: Laura at October 8, 2007 12:41 PM3 and 4 are My Girl and, I think, My Guy.
Temps and Mary Wells
10a Looking hard for a drive-in, searching for a corner cafe
16a Your Cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track
Oops. Never mind 16a. I saw that Elie answered "Southern Man" and I didn't see what the actual
quoted line was.
For the record 16 is not Southern Man. But you're on the right track.
I should have known better to delve into Billy Joel carelessly. Elie said that the order should be reversed.

Posted by: SS at October 8, 2007 05:07 PM"It's My Party" is by Lesley Gore
The Neil Young song is called "Alabama"
And I insist that 10a is the proper antecedent for 11
