Musical monday #2

I don't if this will always be a bi-weekly project, but following up on 2 weeks ago here's the second edition of Musical Monday. No Googling!
Results of the first one are here.
Guess the songs and the theme.

1. Roy Orbison singing for the lonely ...
2. Brenda Lee's "Coming on Strong"
3. Listening to Buck Owens.
4. Neil Young will remember
5. I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked the Beatles
6. Jackie, you set the world on fire
7. Sweet Melissa, angel of my life time
(if last time was any indication, #7 is going to get a lot of yucks!)
8. Sedaka is back
9. Cause my heart ain't ready for the Rolling Stones
10. Old Marty, Hank and Lefty Why I can feel them right here with me
11. Yoko brought a walrus
12 I try to think about Shakespeare, Leap year, The Beatles or the Rolling Stones
And these two are related. how?
13. the jester stole his corny crown
14. I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud

There are (I think) two more, that I didn't write down. If I remember them I'll add them later. And if anyone would like to host future editions of Musical Monday, let me know. (I already have one volunteer.)

UPDATE: OK it's more than 2 more.
15. Cause some of that stuff don't sound much different than Dylan
16. Jimi gave us rainbows
17. Johnny can't you come out to play
18. You were the one who imagined it all...
and 2 classical references
19. Go cart Mozart was checking out the weather chart
20. And tell Tchaikovsky the news

There's one more that I recalled a few days ago, but didn't write it down. Oh well.

UPDATE II: 24. The worn out tape of Chris LeDoux ...
25. McGuinn and McGuire's just a-gettin' higher
26. now i know how Jimmy Buffet feels
27. Dwight Yoakam's in the corner, tryin' to catch my eye

(for 21-23 see Malibu Stacy below.)

And thanks to Elie's Expositions it's "thorny crown" not "corny crown." I've also discovered if I want to make these tougher I really have to concentrate more on country music. No one gets those. :-)

3. Revealing that the growl was always an affectation
5. But they couldn't help me either.

20. Identify each version's pronunciation of "Tzhaikovsky."

The songs I know are these:

4. Sweet Home Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd
5. The Seeker, The Who
13. American Pie, Don McLean
14. Killing Me Softly With His Song, Roberta Flack
19. Blinded By The Light, originally Bruce Springsteen but also Manfred Mann's Earth Band
20. Roll Over Beethoven, Chuck Berry

And the theme would be songs that reference other songs or musicians.

Here's my shot at it, without recourse to previous comments or the internet:

1) "Thunder Road" by Bruce Springsteen - but is it "singing" or "sang"?

3) "Looking Out My Back Door" CCR

4) "Sweet Home Alabama", Lynryd Skynryd

5) "The Seeker", Who

7) It's by Barry Manilow - is "Sweet Melissa" the title? Boy this brings me back to high school when, I admit I still listened to stuff like this!

13) "American Pie" by Dom McLean, but I believe the lyric is "*thorny* crown"

14) "Killing Me Softly", originally written by Lori Lieberman about Dom Mclean, more well-known version by another female artist whose name I'm blanking on at the moment.

19) "Blinded By The Light", Bruce, later done by Manfred Mann

20) "Roll Over Beethoven", ELO (and others)

Several others are familiar but can't place them at the moment.

1.Thunder Road-Bruce Springsteen

4. Southern Man-Lynyrd Skynyrd

5.The Seeker-The Who

13 and 14 are familiar

17 is Elton John, but I forgot the actual name of the song.

19.Blinded by the Light-Bruce Springsteen

20. Roll Over Beethoven

I'm sorry, number 4 is SWEET HOME ALABAMA!

Southern Man was the Neil Young song that was in response to.

Posted by: Laura at June 11, 2007 12:07 PM

Right, but Neil Young had another "be ashamed O Southerners" song that was actually called "Alabama."

Posted by: Yitzchak Goodman at June 11, 2007 12:29 PM

2. "Radar Love" - Golden Earring
11. "Garden Party" - Ricky Nelson
18. "All Those Years Ago" - George Harrison

My additions in the theme of songs about other artists (with bonus points given for naming the artist being sung about):
21. "Empty halls and beveled mirrors"
22. "Change my life, make it right"
23. "Rodney's feeling sexy"

Posted by: Malibu Stacy at June 11, 2007 03:37 PM

22. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes by Crosby Stills and Nash. Was Judy Collins the artist being sung about?

Posted by: Laura at June 11, 2007 05:18 PM

I assume "Rodney's feeling sexy" refers to Rod Stewart, but I don't know the song and artist.

No takers for 16? "and Janis took a piece of our hearts"

Name this song: "Don't expect the words to fall too sweetly on your ear"

#16 Rock and Roll Heaven

Posted by: Gail at June 11, 2007 06:34 PM

25. "Creeque Alley" - The Mamas and the Papas (which ties in nicely with my #21)

Laura's right about 22, but the extra points for 23 only count if you can name that tune! Hint: the singer is probably best known as an actor who served Meatloaf for dinner.
