Four months

Ever wonder why this blog is free of controversy and nasty stuff? It's because my mother reads it. (I'd like to say that that's also the reason it's free of mispelings and typohs, but even she couldn't correct all of those.)

Last week she reminded that I'd forgotten to mark our baby's fourth month.

In truth, her fourth month wasn't much different from her third month. Most of her progress came from improving the skills she acquired last month. New skills were generally not evident.

The biggest new skill is that she can now use the exersaucer. We put her in and not only can (and does) she play with the activities in front of her, she has figured out how to turn around and avail herself of all the fun stuff.

Last month I reported that she started grabbing objects. Now she grabs them more often and with greater confidence. Yesterday she not only played with the toys on her gym, she pulled off one of them.

She babbles a lot. Actually gurgling is probably the more accurate description of the noises she makes. (And she can make those sounds at varying levels of volume from pleasantly playful to ear splitting shrieks.) No one else has quite figured out how to make her exact sounds but we do try. (Her favorite word used to be "gweck;" I'm not sure what it is now. But I do talk to her with nonsense words and as long as the correct inflection is there she seems to enjoy that.)

She went to the doctor for her checkup last week and was average. (Average weight and height.) For our children that translates to "tall." However the doctor strangely did not have a cuteness scale.

She still does not flip. Apparently this is a result of spending so much time on her back. We do give her some tummy time, but she doesn't much like it. The problem is that there are disadvantages to keeping babies on their backs. It may be safer but it isn't without cost.

So she continues to grow and thrive, thank God. And we continue to enjoy.

The exersaucer is a great thing. My daughter really enjoys using it each day.

To resolve the grandmother problem, we run a separate blog for our daughter. 400 posts in 2006; it lets my pseudonymous blog stay controversial, and the relatives get their delicious dose of cute photos on a near-daily basis. (And it means that people who might not like my political views don't get too much added information about my family.)

As for the saucer, we got an activity table with an attached seat that could revolve and rotate around the table. Once the little one was able to stand, we just unclipped the seat, and let her play with the table directly.

That's great. Our daughter is only 2 weeks younger than yours. We just started the exersaucer (dug out of storage). It's fun to prop her up with blankets behind her back. Thanks for the update.

"Gweck." My 21-month old is fluent in "Deedaw" and "digadigadiga".
