"Controversial"
We start off with this picture

and the caption reads
A masked Palestinian man sprays graffiti on Israel's controversial security barrier
perhaps it should have read
A masked Palestinian man sprays CONTROVERSIAL grafitti EQUATING ISRAEL WITH NAZI GERMANY on Israel's EFFECTIVE security barrier ...
Let's use the adjective "controversial" in other circumstances.

Palestinian supporters of Hamas peer out from behind a CONTROVERSIAL billboard CALLING FOR ISRAEL'S DESTRUCTION ...
Palestinian supporters of the Fatah movement wave their hands IN A CONTROVERSIAL SALUTE REMINISCENT OF THE GENOCIDAL NAZI REGIME ...
(CAPS are my additions to Reuters' text)
Ineffective
Then there was this caption Palestinian security force officers hold plastic pistols as they take part in a training session in in the Jebaliya Refugee Camp
Would those things help if someone attacked them with pointed stick?
Where's the Pulitzer winning Robin Givhan when you need her?

The captions read
Palestinian security officers stand guard at the Karni crossing, east of Gaza, after an explosives-laden car was found
2 questions:
1) After all that specialized training, don't you figure they could look a little more alert?
2) So the Palestinian Security Forces stopped one terror attack. What about all those attacks that they didn't stop? (via Backspin)
Rally or news conference?

A Palestinian militant from the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades ... as he attends a rally in Gaza City
The AP reports that this was a rally. As long as we're using adjectives though perhaps we could change the caption to
A Palestinian militant from the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades DISPLAYING ILLEGAL WEAPONRY as he attends a rally in Gaza City

Interestingly, Reuters caption is
Palestinian gunmen from the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades attend a news conference
A news conference? With such an impressive display of weaponry, I find that a bit hard to believe.

Posted by SoccerDad at April 27, 2006 4:59 AM | TrackBackWell done. I liked the part about not being able to look alert even after the special training. Apparently the problem is there were no flaming hoops to jump through or stacks of bricks to smash with their heads.
Posted by: AbbaGav at April 27, 2006 7:51 AMGood point. What is more motivating?
1) Ahmed be alert so you don't look like a charbroiled lamb.
or
2) Ahmed be alert so you can stop a holy jihadi from killing Jews and joining his 72 holy virgins?
Maybe Tony Snow should start showing up to news conferences bearing heavy weaponry.
