We want a short fat white guy to play center

From yesterday's Washington Post, "'Talent' label takes a vacation in diversity quest"

Washington Wizard scounting camps have traditionally sought the best athletes to recruit for the team - who have mostly been tall, young and black.

But this year, the team decided to try a different approach. Instead of recruiting top amateur basketball players from high schools and colleges, officials started recruiting in 30 and over leagues at local community centers.

Team officials -- like officials of a growing number of teams across the country -- are trying to find a more diverse pool of players. They are experimenting with new ways to reach out to athletes who might have special abilities but may not have been recognized through traditional scouting methods.

...
In their latest camp, team scouts have created the Older Athletes Program, aimed at identifying middle-aged short, fat white men who have potential but might need extra support. The team also has added expanded its contacts with 30 and over leagues in hopes of giving a broader spectrum of athletes more opportunities.

"We've changed from labeling players to labeling functions," Van Horn said. "It's not whether you're talented, it's what's appropriate for you."

Isn't it pretty to thinks so? has a more thoughtful approach to the article.

Brilliant and very funny (at least to basketball fans). I wish they'd started this about 10 years ago.

Gifted Education Exists for a Reason; Don't Water it Down

Classes for mentally gifted children exist for a reason. Gifted kids are bored and frustrated in most regular classrooms. I know I was. It was like a breath of fresh air during the years when gifted classes were available. I don't talk about my own background much, but in this case it's unavoidable. It's hard to describe what a child is missing when education is not at his or her appropriate level.
