I recently received an e-mail about a generous contribution actor Denzel Washington made to a facility called the Fischer House in San Antonio. The e-mail claimed that he wrote a check on the spot to build a whole new house. I was a little suspicious and found the story debunked at Snopes.
However that shouldn't detract from the fact that he did visit the facility and, some months later, made a generous contribution to it.
The last part of the e-mail contrasts the (exaggerated) behavior of Denzel Washington with that of other celebrities. One celebrity who is not mentioned dismissively in the e-mail is Al Franken. And there's a good reason, (whether the author of the e-mail realized it or not) because Al Franken has visited and entertained the troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Though I don't think much of him or his humor, he deserves a lot of credit for volunteering his time to support the troops!
And though you probably haven't heard of them, the Second Amendments went abroad this week to entertain the troops. Who are the Second Amendments?:
The Second Amendments -- Reps. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) on guitar and lead vocals, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) on lead guitar, Dave Weldon (R-Fla.) on bass guitar, Kenny Hulshof (R-Mo.) on drums and Jon Porter (R-Nev.) on keyboards -- were scheduled to fly out yesterday to spread holiday cheer on a five-country tour that wraps up next week.
I guess that they'll be exercising their constitutional right to bear musical instruments in a well regulated band and play for the troops.
