This week's Haveil Havalim, hosted by SerAndEz is the first anniversary of the Jewish / Israel blogging carnival. (What I just learned from KesherTalk's 4th anniversary post, I wasn't the first to refer to a blogging carnival with Haveil Havalim.)
Last year with an idea - sometime around the time I signed up to host Carnival of the Vanities - was to start one for the world I increasingly found myself in - the Jewish and Israel blogosphere.
I e-mailed a few other bloggers and they liked the idea. ( Two of them had the temerity to challenge my translation of Vanity of Vanities too!) From those 3, I expanded the roll of host by asking DovBear to host. Shortly afterwards Bloghead and KesherTalk volunteered. I asked It's Almost Supernatural to host and he agreed. Joseph Alexander Norland of Israpundit and Multiple Mentality volunteered as did (IIRC) Critical Mastiff, Mystical Paths, Devarim and Shiloh Musings. (That rounds out the first 20 weeks; don't be offended if I didn't mention you, yet. Hopefully I'll fill the remaind of hosts over the course of the week.)
It took awhile for Haveil Havalim to take off. Mostly due to bad planning. 1) I chose a title that was too obscure. Despite some thoughts about changing it I think I'll keep it. When I put the question up there was surprisingly little interest in changing the name. 2) I should have enlisted more than 3 other bloggers to start things off.
However this summer, with some exposure and advice from Kesher Talk and Meryl Yourish I contacted a number of other bloggers and our hosting rolls and exposure expanded. (It doesn't hurt that - thankfully - Instapundit links to us most of the time. Though he hasn't - yet - this week. Bummer.)
Any many thanks to all of you hosts who have made Haveil Havalim a success. And thanks to our growing legion of readers. Please come back for more.
Because of this anniversary I'm asking that if you nominate one of your posts from last year too (sometime from Dec 2004 - Jan 2005) so we can see what you're blogging about now and what you were blogging about then.
Ah but I wasn't blogging a year ago, some of you will say. True enough, for many of you. OK, then an alternative (even if you were blogging last year) would be to include a link to your first post or write up a post explaining why you started blogging and link to that.
So Haveil Havalim #49 can be Haveil Havalim the anniversary and nostalgia edition.
It's worth noting how much the J-Blogging world has expanded in the past year. The JIB Awards are returning, but the finals will be at the Jerusalem Post. Haveil Havalim is listed (if we submit it) in the TTLB Ubercarnival, Conservative Cat's Carnival Page and has an entry at BlogCarnival., so you have plenty of ways of getting your fix of vanity.
Though Jameel recently lamented that he missed all the fun, I think that the fun is just beginning.
UPDATE: And of course you can always send your entry/entries to SerAndEz at his e-mail of serandez at verizon dot net.Posted by SoccerDad at December 12, 2005 5:02 AM
