Well SerAndEz has tagged me. (I never did meme 7.):
I've seen this meme floating around, but not yet in the J-blogosphere. So here goes:1. Turn on your mp3 player.
2. Hit shuffle.
3. Put the first fifteen songs that come up in a post. No matter how embarassing. No cheating!
Since I don't own an iPod, I couldn't do it.
So what to do? SerAndEz suggests:
Problems: I don't own an I-Pod. I DO own a Dell DJ20, a 20-GB MP3 player - but I took almost everything off of it to redo it. And, I haven't yet done that because someone stole ALL my music (about 4,000 songs) to copy it all - and hasn't returned it. So I'll look around and see what's here, and put down that.
So that's what I did. I wrote the names of my 28 popular music cds - none of the classical - in an Excel spreadsheet and wrote a quick random shuffle macro.
Here are the results:
Chronicle - CCR
Jim Croce - Greatest hits
Fleetwood Mac
Four Tops
Alan Jackson - Greatest Hits (vol 1)
George Jones - Super Hits (vol 1)
Cryin' Lyin' Lovin' Leavin' - Assorted country hits
All over the place - Bangles
James Taylor - Greatest Hits
Tom Petty Greatest Hits
Pop hits of the 70's - 3cds
Beach Boys - Sounds of Summer
Some Things I Know - Lee Ann Womack
Simon and Garfunkel - The Best of
16 Biggest Hits - Ricky Van Shelton
If I were stranded on a dessert island (and had an unlimited supply of power and cd player) and could choose only 3 CD's, I'd probably choose Chronicle, The Best of Simon and Garfunkel and Beatles 1.
I realize that Beatles 1 is not on this list, but I have it. It's nice. But it's missing so much good stuff ( While my guitar gently weeps, Back in the USSR, I am the Walrus, Fool on the hill, Day in the Life, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band). One of these days hopefully I'll get the red album and the blue album and be happy with those.
Which leads me to a discussion at Elie's Expositions about the most overrated pop/rock groups and acts. I'd agree with my former roommate about the Doors (who I don't think hold up well at all) and John Cougar Mellencamp.
I'd like to add: Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Bruce Springsteen (he's good, but I don't think as good as his avid fans make him out to be), Peter Frampton (a fossil from the 70's).
And while you're at Elie's Expositions why not leave him a birthday wish (Dec 7)! (No birthday kisses though, unless you're his wife.)
I'm tagging: Elie's Expositions, Crossing the Rubicon2, Meryl Yourish, The Colossus of Rhodey.Hube, Penny Stock, A Whispering Soul - (even though he's doing Haveil Havalim this week) and Boker Tov Boulder.
Posted by SoccerDad at December 6, 2005 10:48 PM | TrackBackWe have very similar tastes in music! I saw The Boss in concert -- but only cause a friend had free tickets and we were in a sky box! I was dying to see what one of those was like. I know people who would have killed to see the show. He just doesn't do it for me. S&G on the other hand were amazing!
Posted by: esther at December 7, 2005 12:59 AMSome good tunes in there.
Posted by: Jack at December 7, 2005 3:28 AMI don't own an MP3 player either. I will give it some thought and figure out some way to answer this great challenge.
Posted by: Gail at December 7, 2005 7:08 AMI don't own an IPOD or MP3 player either, but I'll try to figure something out using my available stone knives and bearskins.
In terms of overrated groups/singers, in the comments of my original post I listed AC/DC, Def Leppard, Grateful Dead, John Mellencamp, Peter Gabriel and Neil Young. I can't believe I forgot the artist I consider the most overrated - David Bowie. And I also agree with you on Frampton, but not ELP.
In terms of Bruce I half-way agree. I think his most popular songs are definitely overrated - Hungry Heart and Born in The USA never did it for me. But I love his first three albums, when his music was still raw, full of energy, and rough around the edges. I never get tired of Rosalita, Spirits In The Night, or anything from Born to Run. His first two albums are *under*rated, if anything.
