Mind Guerillas

David Pinto has a link to an interesting article in the Baltimore Sun about how the Baltimore Orioles are using psychological evaluations to determine which players to acquire. While I agree with his general point that "...[i]t's another way to find good young talent," I don't see that the Orioles have proven anything yet. Pinto wonders "[h]ow long the Orioles will have this edge..." I don't see it as an edge until we've seen the results.
Last year the Orioles traded for Kurt Ainsworth, a pitcher with a broken shoulder, because of his psychological profile. It's a rare injury and we don't know what the long term effects of the injury will be. I would still think (and David Pinto acknowledges as much) that the health of a pitcher's arm is more important than what's going on in his head.
Let's wait a few years and see if Ainsworth and Adam Loewen are leading the Orioles to the playoffs again. (One of the commenters, Rob, made the same point.)
