Blizzard

Today my twelve year old insisted to me that the definition of "blizzard" includes 75 mile an hour winds. I disagreed strongly and said that 75 mph winds are hurricane force. Winds like that don't occur that frequently (around here anyway.) Well now I have proof:

A blizzard is defined this way:

1) Snow and/or blowing snow reducing visibility to 1/4 mile or less for 3 hours or longer

AND
2) Sustained winds of 35 mph or greater or frequent gusts to 35 mph or greater. There is no temperature requirement that must be met to achieve blizzard conditions.

It's 35 not 75.
This is an entry of the Weather Blog. The blog is a project of the Baltimore Sun ( hosted in a section called Maryland Weather and blogged by the Sun's science reporter Franklin Roylance.)
In another post, Roylance calls for "...bread, toilet paper and ... a digital camera!". It's an invitation to post your weather related pictures on the website. (Gallery and registration here. Go to the second page to see Aurora pictures from this past November. I never saw them, though I looked occasionally.)
I don't know if Crossing the Rubicon2 can participate (she lives in Virginia), but she posted contrasting shots of her "Backyard Bench."
Roylance also linked to an explanation of the weather pattern that just hit us from Accuweather.
