Ha'aretz has an interesting profile of Peter Himmelman, musician and son-in-law of Bob Dylan, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door."
I remember hearing a song of his years ago on HFS from his album Gematria. The DJ had no clue what Gematria was. I called and explained that it involved assigning numeric values to letters.
A friend told me a funny (possibly apochryphal) story of the celebration of marriage Himmelman to Maria Dylan. In the synagogue prior to a person's marriage the groom is called to the Torah. Bob Dylan was in synagogue to celebrate, but apparently didn't dress appropriately, and looked rather ragged. When he was given an honor, someone who didn't recognize the singer said that it was nice that they gave an honor to a homeless man.
It's all Greek to me...
Gematria is probably better pronounced "gamma - treia," which better indicates its system, as it means that the letter gamma has a value of three.
